Soto's age had never been questioned before Simpson's comment...

Proof that Bryan Mcwilliam doesn't read WNFF...
I don't think it is bad to say he looks old. I would guess Taylor was 19 before Soto. Everyone ages differently.  I haven't watched that clip, but the only problem would be if he was strongly hinting Soto was lying about his age.

I also would guess the Nats would be more thorough than any team making sure every background item was checked with our Dominican players. We saw what happened in the past when a teenage got tied up with bad people, and I doubt we would let it happen again.

Simpson literally said, "if he's 19..." aka openly questioned his age. What a freaking jerk. Between this and his Dodgers comments, the guy clearly has issues, pathetic excuse for a broadcaster. don't remember simpson questioning if bryce harper was 19. wonder why!

FP and bob are total goobers but at least they're aren't complete dickheads like this clown.

baseball wonders why it can't get any latin stars. well, here's a broadcaster looking at a blossoming superstar and saying, "Fans, this guy is a fraud of a human and we shouldn't believe him."

Age issues are obviously a thing in the DR but there's no evidence besides his success and his size and simpson's belief that a 19-year-old from the DR isn't allowed to be this good.

Are DR age issues still a thing.  I assumed that was a 20+ year ago thing, and they have more modern record keeping now?

If the Nats didn’t do their due dilligence on his age, they are literally insane.

Well the whole scandal with Jose Rijo and that one Nats prospect happened only 10 years ago.

MLB does the age verification for prospects born in the DR. Mostly to keep teams from signing underage players.

I'm with UMD on this.    Get back to me when he questions how old Trea Turner is.    We all know what's goin' on here.     I don't believe for a minute this Simpson character (an appropriate surname) is wondering about Soto's age.     I know our and MLB's DR history and his opinion ain't part of that.     Simpson's either ignorant (he is a Barves' announcer afterall) or he's tryin' to get in somebody's head.    I wouldn't be surprised if the Barves' network doesn't like his "edginess".        Personally, I don't care if Soto's 50.    I like him.

Sorry for the rant.   I think it's an emotional outburst/hangover from the disappointing game last night.   I better go hit some golf balls for therapy.    I'm sure that'll help.     :)

Also even if Soto was 24 what he's doing is damn remarkable. For a broadcaster to intentionally mislead his fanbase like this is completely disgraceful.

I was thinkin' about it on the way to the range.    I don't think Simpson was talkin' about his skill level.    :)

OT    So I get to the range to hit a small bucket  ...   gotta get back to go to the pool.   I'm givin' 'em a good whack and the kids golf academy is walkin' by.    I happen to know the teacher and he sez, "This guy is here every week.     Even though he'll tell ya he's not very good (I'm not.), he comes out and practices."     The group consists of maybe or 8 kids/boys and girls.    The oldest boy is about 14/15 and reminds me of the kid on the FiOS commercial.     He sez to me, "Hey dude."

Props to Rizzo  ....

After Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo got wind of the comment from a team PR employee, he decided to confront Simpson about it before the second game, as first reported by the Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

“Our PR people, when they see these tweets out there and that type of thing, I get alerted to it,” Rizzo said during his weekly appearance Wednesday with the Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan. “Because I have nothing to do with social media. They alert me when things come up that I need to know about, and they thought I needed to know about this. Then I handled it. It took all of about 10 minutes.”

Rizzo said Simpson’s comment was “uninformed” and “unfortunate.”

OT   I wonder if the Nats' PR people notify him of WNFF's comin' and goin's?      :couch:

Yes, he has a certain chime that dings every time VaRK posts about BABIP or MDS posts about various ways people can support themselves if baseball doesn't work out.

Of course if y'all remember I posted something about his age months ago. Of course for a supposed journalist it's really dumb. I heard Simpsons rant about the Dodgers batting practice attire a few weeks ago and then some ESPN radio types ripping him for it. He holds himself out as a keeper of the Dodgers way even though he basically only had a cup of coffee with them. Guy is an idiot. As bad as Carp and FP can get try don't mindlessly rip the other team for made up things. Don Sutton is better because he is too drunk to say much.

Simpson's not a journalist.

He's not, but he's also got an entire team's fanbase as an audience, so openly accusing a player's age without any evidence besides "he's really big and good" is reckless considering his platform and he should be rightly shamed.

His "apology" was nonsense/half-assed and a ton of Braves fans will assume he never backed down and will believe Simpson is right to question his age. Like NIPWC said, Bob and FP are total goobers and say a lot of dumb crap but don't go around trying to tear down other teams.

Simpson has pissed off 2 teams in, like, a month, by accusing them of total nonsense. Total clown.

Which still makes me wonder if Rizzo is already an undercover member here.

I hope Simpson learned his lesson, probably don't want Rizzo and his Italian temper looking for you from now on.

I find it ironic that the GM of a team that employs Bob Carpenter should get in the face of another team's broadcasters for saying mindlessly stupid crap on the air.

I'm still skeptical of DR recordkeeping. You'd think anyone would be, what with their track record. Are Birth Certificates still relatively rare in the DR?

Did Simpson take a guess at how old he thought Soto was? I mean, that Little League pitcher some yrs back was 18, successfully (up to a point) passing for 12.

The incident with Little League pitcher Danny Almonte happened almost 20 years ago, and cases like this haven't happened since back then as far as I've read. It's ridiculous to even bring that up in this day and age for anyone who just happens to be from the Dominican.

The Smiley Gonzalez- Carlos Alvarez fraud was what, 8-9 years ago? That had serious implications for the Nats as you well know. How can you be so assured that today's DR record recording/keeping is on the up and up? What suddenly changed?
