I don't know about that.  He has 21, but 18 of them in April and May.   two homeruns in June. How do we know July, August, and September won't be more like June than April or May.  Don't forger 2016; he had 9 in April and then a total of 15 for the remaining five months.

That's a fair point but I also know he's a streaky hitter. He can hit 'em in bunches.

Wow, that's harsh. Players are going to slump. And, really, it's not like Harper is having a totally bad year. The guy is going to end up with 40HR and 100 RBI, roughly. I know his BA and OBP is down but that can change.

It's not really about what he's done in the past when deciding if to sign him or not, it's what you think he's going to do in the future.

Again, I just think the guy is super scrutinized and some fans just don't like the highly hyped, highly paid players with a bit of color. They prefer to root for "gamers" like Eaton, Roark, etc. I get that. Underdog and all.

Harsh?  Oh please.      I think skills can deteriorate quickly at the highest levels of sport, even at 25.    He's been in the league 6 years.   It may even be as Boras contends the way foes are defending/pitching him and he can't/doesn't know how to adjust.    He's never had to change the way he takes care of his business.    Hell maybe he needs glasses.        As rileyn indicates, this is more than a batting slump.    If I'm a GM lookin' at what he may do "in the future".   His current productivity is not helpful to my givin' him a big payday (at least in his mind).    To get that kind of cash, he does "need to turn it around quickly."

...  and I hope I'm wrong.

I think some people will look at the last two months and not pay him. But I think most baseball people will look at the body of his work, not just the last two months.

The body of work is streaky and injury prone with one amazing year

He has very good stats overall for 7 years. .896 career OPS. And young. He will get paid.

And I'm not referrin' to his folks.    It's everybody who's ever come in contact with him (prodigy).    As John Thompson once said about a player, "No one's ever told him to sit down and shut the hell up."

I can't wait till he is gone. Lone wolfs are not good for teams unless they are super productive

I had the same random thought about glasses. With all his struggles lately, you would hope that he’s had a complete eye exam recently.

He has no intention  of staying here.
He us pandering to the Yankees. Wants to be their firstbaseman.
Get rid of him now. Get something back. Time to cut bait and fish.

This man has lost his special ability to hit a baseball better than most on the planet.   These pitchers are challenging him and he is missing center cut fastballs.  Balls he should be driving are being fouled off or whiffed.

Every at bat they shifted on him and every time he swung to pull the ball or took the walk. They gave him easy doubles but he passed. I know he heard me every time, I told him to just hit it into left, told him he was a moron for not taking what they were gifting.

Me too. I think his best years are still ahead of him. But I want him at the right price. I trust Rizzo is not going to give away the store.

The question in my mind is when is he going to overcome this? Everyone goes thru slumps. Max is in a 0-4 slump. Does anyone think that's permanent? No. And it isn't for Bryce. He will eventually overcome this.  And if it continues with minimal improvement it will definitely affect his upcoming contract negotiations but so will the owners new found frugalness as we saw in last years free agent signings and non-signings.

I don't disagree with you.  I just don't know when he is going to bottom out, Maxs' 0-4 is more to a lack of run support rather than being ineffective and not throwing strikes like Gio. Last 6 starts he gave up 1 run once  three runs once and two runs four times. As folks say W-L is BS. The lack of offense will cost him the CY.

edit

His slump is starting to look less like a slump and more like a season
