The hate for Harper after he watched a fly ball that he thought was going out is weird. It happens a lot in MLB but you don't see people freaking out over others when they do it.

I don't think I've ever seen an athlete who has ever gotten as much scrutiny as Harper does.

He's been staring at every HR this year, whilst hitting .210.  How can you not get the hate?

Meanwhile...the Park was sold out for 3 straight dates at over 120,000 paid...

Staring at every homer that goes out is just fine. And, the hate is easy to understand. Sports fans are not complicated. You perform well, they love you. You perform below expectations, they don’t love you.

And I'm not referrin' to his folks.    It's everybody who's ever come in contact with him (prodigy).    As John Thompson once said about a player, "No one's ever told him to sit down and shut the hell up."

I don't agree with all what's said in this article, but I'm getting tired of the conventional narrative about Harper.

http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/news/bryce-harper-selfish-losing-player-washington-nationals-free-agent-rumors-yankees/13q5c7ixw1lac1xp4ht5542zwc

Is Harper selfish for trying to go deep every time up? No, he's just like every other power hitter.

Is he selfish for not busting tail every second? No, he's just like every other big-leaguer, star or scrub.

Is he selfish for showing off his throwing arm at times? No, he just has a rocket, and he tries to deter baserunners with it.

Is he selfish for speaking his mind or for being cocky? No, that's just his personality. Deal with it.

If he's just like the other Joes, he ain't worth $400,000,000.    Him and Scottie can deal with that.

Agreed on each individual point, add them all up and what do you get?

He's not like all the Joes when it comes to talent. The article was addressing ancillary issues that some fans seem to obsess about it.

Don't remember if either started, but I remember one year that both Reggie Jackson and Dave Lopes being on All-Star teams hitting .199 each.

You can say a lot of things about Harper but you can't say he's like all the other Joe's when it comes to talent. Former MVP, five-time all star, leading the league in HRs, etc., and just 25.

Agree with BiL on Bryce.  I've no clue how someone so supremely talented could be such the suck all season but he is head and shoulders above most players talent-wise.

Wow, that's harsh. Players are going to slump. And, really, it's not like Harper is having a totally bad year. The guy is going to end up with 40HR and 100 RBI, roughly. I know his BA and OBP is down but that can change.

It's not really about what he's done in the past when deciding if to sign him or not, it's what you think he's going to do in the future.

Again, I just think the guy is super scrutinized and some fans just don't like the highly hyped, highly paid players with a bit of color. They prefer to root for "gamers" like Eaton, Roark, etc. I get that. Underdog and all.

I don't know about that.  He has 21, but 18 of them in April and May.   two homeruns in June. How do we know July, August, and September won't be more like June than April or May.  Don't forger 2016; he had 9 in April and then a total of 15 for the remaining five months.

I don't know if he is going to get to 40 HR or 100 RBI.  In his last 30 games he has 3 HR and 10 RBI.  His blazing April and May set him up to have nice projections, but he needs to turn it around quickly.  (yes, I know, Captain Obvious)

Talent needs to be continually honed, that's probably even true of rare specimens, or it will blunt.

Fake news. Bryce no longer has the arm and no longer intimidates runners with it. He is just another outfielder.
