This morning Golic & Wingo were making fun of him "not hitting his weight" even after his last night but wanting a $400 million contact. A few days ago after he had an awful game in Toronto another ESPN head joked "Don't worry, he is on pace for $300 million".
I feel like I as a fan need an intervention, because this doesn't bother me at all. Baseball is a business, he is the one going after every shred of publicity possible, he and his agent have never seriously tempered the idea of a mega contract, and other than 2015 he hasn't earned it. And I don't feel bad for him since I would be stunned if his contact dropped below the mid $200-million level, which I don't think his production deserves.
We have had some players like Desmond and Zimmermann enter contract years where no one really expected them back, but this seems to be the most awkward, overplayed storyline of them all. It probably doesn't help that Strasburg is also having a career where he hasn't lived up to hype but is still highly effective. Strasburg got an extension done.
I admit this makes me a bad fan. I need an intervention. I feel like Michael Scott saying “Business is the most personal thing in the world.”
