trade him and Murphy and Madsen  at the deadline  (to bad
you can't add Kintzler and of course Zimmerman to the list)  2019 new leaf 2020 newer leaf when Zimmerman's contract is opted out of

Lol, for what? You trade for rentals who can produce

Agreed though it seems worse than 13 or 15

and today MLB screws Nats fans from what would be a nice sunny day at the Park to an 8 pm pain in the ass game start.

On today's date in 2013, the Nats were 37-38 and 6 GB
In 2015, the Nats had a 3.5 game lead on the division

I don't see how flipping Harp for some prospects is throwing in the towel.  Got enough/better OF bats already.

This morning Golic & Wingo were making fun of him "not hitting his weight" even after his last night but wanting a $400 million contact. A few days ago after he had an awful game in Toronto another ESPN head joked "Don't worry, he is on pace for $300 million".

I feel like I as a fan need an intervention, because this doesn't bother me at all. Baseball is a business, he is the one going after every shred of publicity possible, he and his agent have never seriously tempered the idea of a mega contract, and other than 2015 he hasn't earned it. And I don't feel bad for him since I would be stunned if his contact dropped below the mid $200-million level, which I don't think his production deserves.

We have had some players like Desmond and Zimmermann enter contract years where no one really expected them back, but this seems to be the most awkward, overplayed storyline of them all. It probably doesn't help that Strasburg is also having a career where he hasn't lived up to hype but is still highly effective. Strasburg got an extension done.

I admit this makes me a bad fan. I need an intervention. I feel like Michael Scott saying “Business is the most personal thing in the world.”

I feel bad when marginal guys fail in a contract year and have to take minor league deals, Harper failing his way into a two or three hundred million dollar contact doesn’t exactly jerk on the heart strings

seems there's a growing amount of chatter around Harper getting a 2 year deal from the Nats and pushing the big pay day out further, or a Strasburg-like deal with an early opt-out.  Would we bring him back for say 2/$50 million plus some incentives?

Sure, but if this is the result of pressure, another two years of this performance won’t end with a $400 million deal

Why would he accept that if he can get more on the open market. I think Strasburg did because his wife likes the area as a place to raise their kids.

Not a bad fan. Exactly the opposite. You are putting the needs of the team vs. a particular player. I've always said I root for the uniform.

As to what he deserves, lots of times contracts are signed not so much based on production but on potential. I think that might be the case here.

If his open market is 7 for 200, 2 for 50 with another chance to get a big deal might make sense. Right now Harper has one great season, but he’ll be three years removed from it hoping to base his pay off of it- maybe he finds a gm who will bite

The incentive for him is to hedge the risk of sucking or getting hurt this year.   That incentive fades as the year goes of course.

I always thought some kind of deal that gave the Nats 2 years and gave him long term security with opt outs after 2 years made sense for both sides.

He's going to get more than 7/200 on the open market. With opt outs.

My buddy who isn't a Nats fan texted me this:

Quote
Is Harper injured? Or is he a big tit? Never runs out ground balls anymore. Did he and Paplebon have a dust up about effort a couple years ago?

Quote
Well stop pouting and play. Sorry but he is selfish.

Quote
I know you really like him but it's too obvious he doesn't care about his team. I've never played a high level of sports but I coached humans for 15 years, I know selfish people. And worked with those kind of people still.

Quote
Does he really think someone is going to offer him 200 mil when he is acting like this?

It's sad when our supposed face of the franchise and 20 million dollar man has no hustle and only cares about himself. We would have been better off trading this Diva in the offseason.

What's a "big tit"?   Never heard that expression.

Well, he’s definitely not a “big hit,” so he has to be something else.
