Base loaded in the 8th. Our 300 million dollar man comes up and hits a lazy fly.

Shades of last year's playoffs.

He is so un-clutch it's not even funny

Please define "clutch"

Please define "clutch"

A simple hit would be nice when the game is on the line

Is that too much to ask for from our supposed superstar?

If he keeps chasing crap, he'll keep getting crap. Get the run in any way you can, especially in a bases loaded situation in a tie game, not for him to chase junk that he won't do anything with and end the inning. He's gotten frustrated with walks and now he's just making outs and not doing anything at all. Could use a few days off to get his head straight because his ABs are hurting the team right now, plain and simple.

They said his dad was traveling with him, was hoping maybe he’d have some insight or magic words or something to impart being with him but no go :(

Send him to the Las Vegas 51's minor league team.  It's where he want's to be and where he belongs right now.

It's amazing because up until this season, he had such a great eye for the ball.

I made clutch up? Are you for real??

You must be new to this sports watching thing.

There are guys who are clutch and always have an important hit, goal, TD pass or whatever in any sport. Then there are over-rated guy like Harper who shine when the lights and cameras are off but as soon as it gets real and the pressure rises he folds.

We should have traded him for a few prospects or a pitcher and signed JD Martinez. We would be a much better team right now.

Precisely, a clutch player will always come through when the game counts, it’s easy to spot a clutch player because their teams are always undefeated.

I’m comvinced that the pressure of being the best free agent in the history of baseball got to him

I'm sure his pride is. At least Chris Davis waited until after he got the big contract to crash and burn.

Then why would he ask his father to come to Toronto to eyeball him then?

This is where I'm at. He began the year great, but got nothing to hit. He worried he wasn't producing, so he starting pressing, and is all freaked up now.

He is all "freaked up" because he is more concerned  with being the highest paid ball player ever then winning.
Give it up Bryce. Whatever you get, if not Machado then when Trout becomes an GA you won't  be the highest  paid ever

Let’s see someone dangle generational money in front of you and see if the pressure gets to you. The guy wants to win. He also wants to make money. I’m not sure why they are mutually exclusive and why one is wrong. And no, I don’t think that if he “focused on winning” that the pressure would be any less. In fact if he performed better, the team would do better and he would get paid.

The "Harper doesn't care about winning" nonsense is as stupid as the "Ovechkin doesn't care about winning" nonsense.

Has Harper ever been clutch?

Can you come up with a definition of clutch that is both coherent and applies to any player?

You’re asking someone here for data to support their position?

I know there's a bunch of folks who laugh at "BABIP," but he's been at the extreme end of a fall off in balls dropping in when hit into play. he's It doesn't explain the Ks, but it is legit to say he's hitting the ball like a .270 hitter but he's getting some bad breaks.

listen to Jonah Keri:
https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/bryce-harpers-struggles-are-largely-tied-to-shifts-but-dont-expect-them-to-last/

He's .100 below career BABIP while hitting the ball harder than ever.  Maybe he's crushing the ball into shifts and not spraying the ball more?  Dusty's old if it goes 396 feet and gets out of the park, you don't get extra runs when it goes another 40 feet.    The other thing is, last year had an element of a mirage in that his BABIP was 40 points above his career.

It's not that I laugh at BABIP.    I just wonder about its purpose.
