I heard Tim Kurkjian talking about this today on one of the local sportstalk shows.  He was saying that Harper has always had a tendency to be too intense and take failure too hard -- to the point where Davey Johnson once famously told him something about easing up on himself.

I noticed a while back that he just looked grim whenever the cameras were on him -- and this was maybe even before he really started slumping.  He just may not have the kind of personality that's suited to carrying all that comes with being perceived as a superstar.

He does look too wound up and not at ease when at the plate.  His personality is probably not helping him.  What I saw from the beginning of the year was this.  First he was very relaxed, and didn't swing at anything outside the strike zone.  He walked a lot and hit more than he does now.  "He is taking what the game gives him" the pundits said.  Soon, he became impatient, and started swinging at sliders low and away -- they are like catnip to him.  Once pitchers noticed this, he got sliders, low and outside, whenever they wanted to put him away.  Then pitchers began playing with him, testing the umpire's outside limit.  Since Harper was getting more close pitches now, he naturally struck out whenever he misjudged the umpire's strike zone.  Striking out a few times on close pitches that way made him even more impatient and less inclined to lay off a ball low and away.  Now, he has the worst of all worlds, he's all twisted up not knowing when to swing and when to take a pitch, while at the same time he is even more desperate to get a hit; meanwhile, the pitches are throwing him junk more than ever, and he is hitting les and less.

My prediction for Harper is that he surprises everybody and signs a 2 year extension over the All Star break.  He will get showered with hometown love all week and a weight will be lifted off his shoulders.  He will then quiet all crazy talk about his 2020 free agency.

I won't be surprised. It's the most sensible thing for him to do.

Time to bench him. He’s no longer a productive option. No walks. K’s galore. All he can do is lightly hit the ball to LF.

Michael A Taylor is the better player right now.

I sense a trip to the dl for something undefined coming soon. Maybe smashing minor leaguers in Woodbridge will get his confidence back

You weren't here when Slate had throat fatigue from swallowing Espinosa's cock.
I never did. I just recognized that he was better than the alternative

You dont bench someone with superstar talent for someone having a nice month.

I wouldn't necessarily take that as good news. Only positive part is it would only be for two years.

And, if Harper is having trouble with the pressure in DC, just imagine how it would be for him in NY or Philly.

Don’t bench him. But he should be getting some days off.

Harper is lost. Playing him everyday isn’t helping matters. Nats can’t afford to wait for him to magically get hot. They’re in 2nd place and trail by 3 games. Maybe Davey will pull the plug once his average dips under .200

Correct. Even with Harper struggling, you can't bench him. Harper needs every opportunity to get going. If he gets it going he can offer more than anyone on this roster.

Taylor can be the starting center fielder on a winning team. Harper can carry a team if hot.

Martinez would need approval from on high to make that happen and it's not going to happen.

Everyone does realizes there is something between “play every day” and “be totally benched”?

I think he needs a break. Playing only three times a week just puts more pressure on him to hit when he has a chance

To paraphrase Tommy Lasorda:

Harper couldn't hit water if he fell out of a freakin boat.

:hysterical: Lasorda absolutely killed me with his Kurt Bevacqua meltdown. TOO FUNNY!

Hard to believe this is the same Harper that showed us incredible plate discipline just a year and a half ago and has yet to make adequate adjustments to being pounded away away away then a slider or two under the hands. Unbelievable.

Fact; Harper is not gonna hit until he stops pulling off the ball and gets some balance in that batter’s box.

Go Nationals!!!

Boswell’s got some theories in his Q&A this week https://live.washingtonpost.com/ask-boswell-20180618.html

Bos’ theory is that the contract situation and the fact that the Nats love Bryce and at the same time appear poised to move on without him are really messing with his head. Like when you’re 18 and moving out of your parents house, you’re totally fine till you find out your mom is turning your bedroom into her pottery studio or something. You just get really really sad.   Emotional baggage like that can be really suffocating.

"He is taking what the game gives him" the pundits said.
Just out of curiosity, has anyone besides F.P. (or maybe it was Carpenter) said this?

He actually was making really good contact last night with a few hard hit balls right at people.   I think he is getting close to breaking out of this.
