This maybe a mindfact but I believe Harper is playing not to get hurt hoping that he does not derail his pending new contract. I do not see him running out infield hits, chasing down balls in the outfield with abandon and he is not clutch as his seven HR's, five were solo shots.
I don't know whether it's trying not to get hurt or if he's just not the outfielder we had thought he was, but clearly, this "five-tool" player is four-tool. He is a below average outfielder. That's going to cost him.
Maybe three-tool. If he's not running hard on the basepaths, can you really credit him with the "running" tool? Or dare I say, two- tool? If he doesn't consistently hit the cutoff man or throw to the right base ....
Clearly, hitting and slugging are tools of his, but is that enough for a contract the size people speak of?
