Paps is in the same boat Rafael Soriano was in. If he's not gonna close he's basically a wasted roster spot.

He'll be even more malcontent. Did we forget what happened to Storen?

And honestly, what good is having him for the 8th? That's going to be just as high pressure as the 9th in close games and the post season. He'll have the same issues in the 8th as in the 9th. If he can't close, DFA him, get someone who can.

You guys remember that's why he declined the trade originally, right? That he had to be promised the closer role.

It wasn't contractual. More of a gentlemen's agreement.

Right, and more importantly, it applied to 2015. The "gentlemens' agreement" no longer applies.

Papelbon is a better pitcher than Soriano was. His splitter and slider are still pretty good and he can locate the fast ball. Soriano basically lived at the top of the strike zone. So Papelbon can still be effective out of the closer role. His contract is up and nobody is going to sign him next year as a closer, so it's actually in his interest to show that he can be effective as a set up man. This may also be his last chance to play with a contender.

These rumor sites are silly. Where would Trea even play? Yankees are set at 2nd and SS. Castro and Gregorius arent FA until 2020

The problem with having a premium prospect at an up-the-middle position is that everyone asks for him in every trade. There's absolutely no way he should be moved for a relief pitcher. Any relief pitcher. 60 innings of relief in one or two seasons at a fairly high salary is not even close in value to 6 seasons of SS or 2B with offense and even passable defense at minimum or near minimum salary. They'll want everything and a sandwich, just because they're the Yankees and they spend a lot of time sniffing their own jocks.

Suppose also this: you trade Turner to the Yankees. 2 weeks later, any one of Espinosa, Rendon, or Murphy gets hurt for an extended period (hardly a stretch, especially in Rendon's case). Suddenly you've got your closer...and Stephen Drew playing in your infield every day. Then you're f'ed every day of the week and twice on Sunday. So no. Absolutely not. Papelbon closing is better than even taking the risk of that happening.
