I really doubt Rizzo would do either of those trades now.   The only teams that sign 30 year old position players to long term expensive deals are mis-managed teams trying to make a splash.  ie, the Phillies.   Dodgers don't do it, Astros don't do it, Cubs don't, Red Sox don't, even the Yankees don't any more. Boras is going to have all his clients finishing their careers on crappy teams.  At least they can have fun counting their money.

Werth, yes. Zimmerman, not really, but at the time it would have been a horrible blow to an already struggling franchise if he walked. They had no choice but to sign him.
In retrospect, we should have let him walk. The Cardinals were better off without Pujols.

Not even close to comparable.  Zimmerman was 29 and played 3B.  His 6 years / 100 million at the time was a team friendly deal.  Pujols was 32 and signed a 10 / $240 million deal that was largely back-loaded and is now killing LAA. It's worth $28 million this year, $29 million next year, and $30 million in 2021.  Zimm's deal will end up being 5 years / $90 million assuming the $2 million buyout after this season.

Zimmerman did not age well. His inability to play 3rd base wasn't expected. His constant trips to the DL weren't expected. And his hitting regressed fast than I thought it would. He kind of... fell off. Except that one resurgent year he had.  He's much too young to be playing as old as he is.

Even thought that could also happend to Rendon, You gotta take a chance. It's a gamble but Rendon is still getting better at this point. He's shown no signs of slowing down. I don't see him being Ryan Zimmerman 2.0

At the time of signing, it was known that Zimmerman's time at third was coming to an end. We knew about the injury history. It was a mistake.

He had two seasons with less than 140 games since 2006, and he still played 100+ games in those two. 2014 is when the wheels came off. He played more games in LF than 3B and 1B combined. 2015 onward, he was a first baseman. 2012 and 2013 were still the Zim we knew from the previous several seasons.

Anthony Rendon tells @granthpaulsen & @funnydanny it's been "maybe a month" since he's heard from the #Nats front office about a possible extension, says it's more and more likely he becomes a free agent. bit.ly/2GPxDB5

This is crazy

Those interviewers are insufferable. They would not let Rendon talk. Ask questions and listen for answers. That's how interviews are supposed to go. Sheesh.

That's like saying the Barves are throwing batting practice pitches to Rendon so he can demand a salary out of Mark Lerner's range and the Barves can sign him through free agency

Mark says not to worry, he can throw on a glove and play third next year.

We know Mark Lerner is an imbecile so maybe he too is of the persuasion that Rendon does nothing more than accumulate meaningless stats.

At some level, I'm a fan.  I'm glad Zimm will retire a Nat for life (though the fall off has been painful), and I'm all for extending Rendon.

Can't wait to use the Rendon money to sign Jed Lowrie and Oliver Perez again. So much better to spread it around!

Rizzo is on the Junkies and he says the Nationals sent a counter proposal to Rendon's agent on July 15

if they can't make any moves for bullpen help, it might not be a bad idea to see what they can get for Rendon.

regrettably, I agree. this is just like last year with Harper. I don't believe Rendon will be re-signed as his agent will not accept coupons or deferred money :'(

It went to Boras' SPAM inbox.

I think you're right. But I do have to say that if the Nats cannot re-sign Tony Two Bags, I will be a much less enthusiastic fan (read - I'll go to fewer games and spend less money on the Nats) than I  am now.

That be taken as a pretty big FU to Max,Strasburg,Doolittle,Soto,Turner,Robles, etc who've all played hard and got into a WC spot with the division still in reach.  Finishing out the season well, and having the young guys play in big games is going to help the team going forward.

Yes. You sell Rendon, you're punting the next three years while you wait for Garcia, Denanburg, and Jackson to be MLB ready. May as well trade Sanchez, Scherzer, and Turner if you're going move Rendon.

Only thing that concerns me is we end up with another Harper situation.    He leaves and we have nothing for it.

What is the mood going to be when Rendon and Stras sign elsewhere this winter? Especially with our cupboard essentially barren.
