Sandoval is still playing the majority of his games at 3B as well.

Honestly, he's right. Don't extend him. Don't bother. Then we can watch Soto and Robles walk in five years or so.

They should be trying to extend Soto and Robles now- before they get to this point

and his games played numbers are what you’re trying to avoid

Robles and Turner.   Soto is a Boras client, so he'll get to this point too.

I’d love to see a team start optioning down boras clients during rebuilding years when they can to pause service time

That's a violation of the CBA, no? It'd be really hard to say Soto has to go down to work on stuff when he's hitting the way he's hitting.

Does the CBA restrict other than by number of option years?

It's not that much different than the Blue Jays not bringing up Vlad.   It seems like something that might get changed in the next CBA.  The MLB CBA has tilted in the league's favour compared to other leagues, so I suspect they will be willing to give a few concessions.

No, but there is language in there about sending someone down for team control purposes.

It's vastly different. Guerrero Jr. hadn't spent two years in MLB, crushing baseballs. Imagine if the Astros had sent Altuve down to the minor leagues in 2013 because the team wasn't any good and they wanted to keep more control.

That’s only a possible argument. The bigger downside would be losing fans. And players and agents who wouldn’t want to deal with a team that did that.

I mean, there would be a grievance filed and the team would likely lose.

If Anthony Rendon walks, that is a painful blow to the franchise.

They had to overpay Zimmerman to keep him, had to overpay Jayson Werth to bring him in. They need to overpay Rendon if it comes to that.

Wouldn't that be an argument to not sign him though? Neither Zimmerman nor Werth have been worth their big contracts.

Werth was.  Just based on WAR, Fangraphs estimated his value at about $98 million, his contract was for $126 million.  I'd argue that he brought additional value in terms of changing the view of the franchise.

I think both those deals made sense based on where we were as a franchise at the time.   Zim's has definitely bit us the last couple years though.

Maybe it's mindfact, but I seem to remember that a lot of people thought it was so cool of Zim to sign a home town discount contract when the team was so awful. That was also around the time when people were wondering if he'd challenge the Ripken Iron Man streak. That contract came well before the throwing yips and the chronic nagging injuries. From those early years he seemed on an HOF trajectory rather than the 'solid contributor when present,' or 'injury riddled shell,' that he's devolved into.

No. The biggest problem with the worth on WAR is that you have to vastly overpay for free agents.

Werth, yes. Zimmerman, not really, but at the time it would have been a horrible blow to an already struggling franchise if he walked. They had no choice but to sign him.
