I'm glad we didn't trade Nix.  He'll help us win a few more games this year and he might even get himself to type B status at the end of the year if he gets hot at some point.

I'd like to bring him back as a bench player.

Nix is a no-brainer re-sign for the bench.

I would love to see Nix brought back as a pinch hitter/5th OF/25th man. However, LaRoche's return gives us another left handed bat. Brian Bixler is a pretty good 25th man since he can apparently play every position but catcher and short stop plus he is a good base runner.

I think Bixler will be taking over for Cora.

If Nix becomes Type B, I'd rather have the draft pick. I think he will want to go where he's a starter. He certainly played well enough. Morse can move back to LF and Laroche can play first. Hopefully he can return to form.

People piss on Bixler, but I respect using him. Not every single player on the roster can be a big time star and I like it when we have a guy who can play any position but not whine about at bats and such.

The issue with Bixler is we're the type of team that has to push him onto the frontlines.

Eh, he's a utility player/defensive back up. Clearly we have our middle infield set between Espinosa, Desmond and Lombardozzi.

All we'd be asking Bixler to do is fill the role that Alex Cora did. Frankly, I think Bixler should spend the rest of is time this season in Triple A getting ready for next season.

Gotta love the people questioning the lack of a Wandy move. The freaking Yankees won't even take on Wandy's salary, but you're going to whine about the Nats not doing the same? Get a freaking clue.

The Wandy contract is pretty good if you ask me. I would love to add him to our potential rotation of Strasburg and Zimmermann. It would mean a lot to have 3 very quality starters going 3 out of 5 days.

i don't give a rat's ass what the yankees do or don't do.  Wandy is a legit pitcher that should have at least 3-4 excellent years left in him.  if we're going salary dump players like Marquis and Hairston than reinvest that money in a quality starter.  our owners are filthy rich and with a core of young players now starting to develop it's time the Lerners nut up and start spending like a team with means and i'm talking about spending like the Phils, Yankess, Red Sox etc.  enough of these "ghetto" moves like picking up players like Gomes.

I'm just kicking some ideas around right now, but now we really don't have a major league CF on the roster, and as much as I love Bernie, he's better in left.  When we dangled Desmond on the block writers were using the term "super utility guy."  I know our good friend Ian has had his share of issues at SS and his bat has been, well, non-existent this season.  But I'm not an Ankiel fan AT ALL.  I want us to call Lombo up (he can fill the lead off roll), put Danny at short and play Des in CF, just to see how it works.

2B Lombo
SS Espinosa
3B Zim
1B Morse
RF Werth
LF Bernie/Nix/Gomes
C Ramos
CF Desmond/Bernie/Ankiel

Desmond can't be worse in Center than he is at short (at times).  When he's tuned in he's great, when he's not, not so much.  Do we have any other options, seriously?

How can people say anything bad about Bixler? look at the Nationals record with him on the roster vs. without him. Clearly he is a winner.

Moving Desmond to CF right now would be a huge mistake in my opinion. Since his early season melt down, he's been reasonably good at SS aside from a few hiccups. If we are to consider that, do it in the off season when he has a chance to work on it with out having the pressure of playing in MLB games. I believe that Desi has the physical ability to do it, I just don't think now's the time.

But could he be worse in Center (at times) than he is at SS (at times)?

As did I. I had no clue most people thought 13 million per was a huge contract.

And with the Astros, it sounds like it's just a money dump.  He can probably be had for very little.

Too much money for the Yankees, ripe pickings for the Nats, just claim him on waivers.

The same place that Nats didn't sign for Cody Ross.

34 million dollars seems like a lot for a 32 year old pitcher who is, at best, a number 3

Which would be a #1-#2 on the Nats right now... and a dream team of Stras, Znn and Rodriguez next year.

Seems like a no brainer for the Nats if all he's going to really cost is cash.

Agreed. Wandy is a bit above average and that still makes him a great fit for next year. If Lannan's velocity increase is for real, Strasburg, Zimmermann, Wandy, and Lannan are a better than solid front four. Way better than solid. We can skip the sucky free agent SP market altogether and sit pat with two aces, two above-average guys, and a replacement filler or rookie in the back (Gorzy, Livo, Peacock, Milone, Wang).

I wouldn't be opposed to this, we'll get the same offensive production out of CF with whoever we put out there and who knows maybe Desmond could be like Upton with the switch from shortstop to centerfield?

Except, the Rays kept Upton because he showed that he could hit. The fact that he was good in centerfield was a surprise. They were actually going to move him to LF and play Crawford in center.

Ugh ... I still can't believe we couldn't get Bourn ...

Absolutely, no doubt.  I would argue though, that in general, a CF is challenged less, making it worth a try.
