Asking for the world, lacking reasonable trades, or just stubborn like a mule?

how many people here hated the trade too? I think he made the right call, it was too much for Span

If I had to guess I suspect he has tunnel vision and this time made the right call but it is impossible to know given the amount of information available to us.

Right.  If Span comes back from his concussion to resume his better-than-average CF, we may have missed a chance to fill the most glaring holes in both our offense and defense.  On the other hand, NookII and we'll be glad we kept whoever it was we did in avoidance of Span.

I'm fine with nothing happening today, assuming the Twins really wanted Lombo.

Another thing to consider is that all the leaks were likely on the Twins end. Rizzo seems to run a tight ship -- none of his actual trades are ever leaked in advance. Last year the White Sox were being loudmouthed and negotiating through reporters, this year the Twins were trying the same thing.

Apparently no one thinks Wandy Rodriguez would get claimed off waivers if the Astros put him on there... really? The Nats couldn't use him? And the only thing stopping them is his contract? Nut up Lerners... get this man in the fold.

Quote from: Rotoworld
A rival executive tells SI's Jon Heyman that that chances Wandy Rodriguez is claimed off waivers are "NONE."

It makes sense, as Wandy's remaining 2011 contract and the $25.5 million that he's owed over at least the next two seasons (2011: $7 million, 2012: $10 million, 2013: $13 million, 2014: $13 million vesting option w/$2.5 million buyout) are extremely unappealing. Teams won't want to risk having to take on the contract by putting in a claim. There's a good chance Wandy gets dealt this offseason.

I am ecstatic that we didn't do anything stupid like trade Drew. As a D.C. sports fan, gotta prepare for the worst. I would have liked to maybe get something for Nix or Coffey or Desmond maybe even Clip based on what SD got for Adams but no move is fine with me. I like the guys we got. Maybe a follow the prospect thread should be started for those two guys? Hopefully they will have a good impact.

Dear God No

Since 2008, Rodriguez hasn't had an ERA over 3.60

Am I missing something as to why you don't want him?

Dear God No

Why not?  He's probably more effective than Detwiler/Gorzelanny/Maya/etc.  Just about anyone on our roster except Zimmnn and Stras.

This will be my last post in this thread since the trade deadline has passed and we need to get back to talking about the team we actually have.

Rizzo deserves credit for not dealing Drew Storen for Denard Span.  I was against this from the beginning and while I'm sure the impulse to make this deal was there, I'm glad cooler heads prevailed.  The risk, a player who many, including me, view to be a cornerstone of the franchise, did not outweigh the reward, which was an above-average outfielder who is coming off the DL after a head/brain injury.

What Rizzo deserves blame and/or scorn for is the total lack of results at the trading deadline.  In focusing in on Span, we saw the Braves acquire Michael Bourn at a price that our organization certainly could have exceeded.  We acquired Jonny Gomes, a .211 hitter at the time of the trade, for two minor league players having great seasons.  We traded away Jason Marquis in a deal that most feel was surprisingly one-sided given what seemed to be genuine demand for Marquis around baseball.  Our only other trade, Jerry Hairston Jr. to the Brewers, was fine, although relatively inconsequential in the big picture.

Our biggest off-season moves, signing Jayson Werth and Adam LaRoche, failed to ignite our offense.  At some point, after so many missed opportunities, a gutsy journalist or blogger has to cut through the GM's public relations campaign and ask him when we're actually going to bring in a productive player or two.

3 yrs 39 mil for him is wayyy too much. Clearly or else he would have been traded. This guy is not worthy of being our highest paid pitcher. He is not gonna lead us to the playoffs this year any way unless I am missing something so id rather wait and give someone under age 32 that money this offseason, if we must.

The Lerners have conditioned the fanbase to think this way. They've accomplished their goal.

No. There are about 10 teams in the league that need SP for their playoff run and pretty much all you had to do was pay his contract and no one made a move. The Nationals are not the only ones who shouldnt take on that contract. No one should.

As did I. I had no clue most people thought 13 million per was a huge contract.

The thing is that people naged because trading Storen was said to be messing up chances in the next couple of seasons. But when this is brought up, a player that can actually aid the cause over the next two or three seasons, it is said that he is too expensive and that he can't lead the team to the playoffs THIS season.

I was at the game today and didn't know if we were making any trades or not. I was surprised when Storen came out to close as I thought for sure he would be gone. Gotta say....I'm glad we didn't give up the house for Span.

Unfortunately, we should have gotten Bourn

I'm glad we didn't trade Nix.  He'll help us win a few more games this year and he might even get himself to type B status at the end of the year if he gets hot at some point.
