Anyone else realize Span was born in DC? Went to HS in Florida, but was born in DC.

They could've left him out of the lineup as a precaution, but I doubt it's anything.

Just wrote up Zach Walters, who went to the Nats in the Marquis deal. Up soon at BP, saw him several times this year.

Someone be grabbing this and posting it, please.

Denard Span is also on a long contract isn't he? I would love to trade Clippard for him. For some reason, I don't want to trade Storen though.

As for the O's trade, that is a really damn good deal.

Acquired OF-R Erik Komatsu from Brewers for IF/OF Jerry Hairston Jr. [7/30]

I was speaking to a scout on Wednesday night who is responsible for covering the Brewers system from top to bottom. If you do what I do, these are the best guys to know. He sees every team from Low-A Wisconsin to the big leagues, so he not only sees the players, but the past tense applies as well, so he has seen each player develop and either improve or regress. We were talking about some of the usual suspects in the system at the upper levels like pitchers Wily Peralta and trying to figure out why the Brewers just don't want to give Taylor Green a look, when he suddenly said, “You know who I really like? Komatsu. That guy can really hit.”

An eighth-round pick in 2008, Komatsu finally appeared on the radar when he hit .323/.413/.442 last year in the Florida State League, and this season he's proven it was no fluke at the upper levels with a .294/.393/.416 line for Double-A Huntsville. He's not a star, but he as an excellent approach, as evidenced by his 53 walks over just 320 at-bats.  He also has fantastic hands and a feel for contact, as evidenced by his mere 44 strikeouts. The issue has always been, however, where he does he play? He's small and has no more than gap power.  He's just a 50-55 runner, leaving him as the kind of center fielder than can play there in a pinch but not one you want there every day. What he can do is hit right-handed pitching, run well, and play all three outfield positions, which should lead to a long career as a second division starter or fourth outfielder in the big leagues. —Kevin Goldstein

If Storen is dealt, then Clip has to be given the ball as closer, for this year and beyond, IMO.

Trading Storen would be insane.  You guys are absolutely nuts if you think that makes any sense.  He is a core player that we drafted and has quickly blossomed into a very good major leaguer.

I don't even agree with Clippard being traded, but if Storen goes, I will be absolutely livid.

Wow that's a great trade for the O's.  Uehara was the only guy in their pen worth a darn but they got a lot for him.

Good for the Rangers, too.  Chris Davis was never going to play for them in the majors.  Uehara might be one of the best relievers on the market and the Rangers didn't get caught up in the 'closer' label.

He was drafted as a sign-ability pick.

The only Nats fans I've ever heard talk this way about Storen are on this board.  He is a core player and a huge part of this team's future.  Trading him for a slightly above average player like Denard Span would be a disastrous mistake.

Span plus more?
Maybe Span is a bluff and we land something else?

Wow, Chris Davis and Mark Reynolds on the same team? AL East pitchers must be salivating. That's a guaranteed 5 strikeouts a game

Wrong-o, buffalo chips breath. Fangraphs has even called Span "The Most Underrated Player in Baseball" - his WAR as projected pre-season by fans was .8 for a half-season but in the first half his actual war was 2.8.

Major league career, Span is .289/.366/.391 with a .341 wOBA and 71 steals in 93 tries. He's put up a 9.3 UZR this year in CF. Where's the slightly above average part again?

Not impressed, especially with the steals.  71 steals in his entire career?  Would rather have Clippard or Storen.

He has OBP like this team hasn't seen in years.

"his entire career" = like 3.5 years or something.
I think his UZR is something like 25 points higher than Bernadina's in CF.
Oh and career average OBP .366
