Fun game... bad outcome. I really hate Philly fans.
I have to question three things though:
1. Why do you bring in a struggling Burnett vs Utley, Howard, Ibanez. Yes I understand - its matchups. I would've brought in Coffey or Slaten though. Both have been pretty decent as of late so I would say let them continue it.
2. Why did Cora go home with no outs? I like Cora > Hairston for now and I am even advocating that we lead him off playing short for awhile. But that play was completely boneheaded. Was it Bo or was it Cora? I mean is a man on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out really that bad??? Espinosa's pop up would've gotten the tieing run in either way.
3. Why... WHY do you pinch run Morse with Bixler AND bring in Stairs on the same play. I get it: we want speed on the base paths.... but did Riggleman forget that Morse is one of, if not, our best hitters? I mean batting around the lineup to get to him is a problem in itself but seriously, why do that. I would think Morse would score on a single from second.
It's true that Rizzo's roster under the constraints of the Lerners doesn't make it easy on a manager. But Riggleman doesn't help himself with his management style. It's all about push-button management, worrying about guys getting playing time, double-switches for no reason, etc. No accountability (unless your name is Morse, then he has no problem telling the public you didn't do your job when you fail at the plate despite other successes.) He double switches to bring in Burnett to face the lefties, which only makes sense if you plan to have him pitch the next inning, which doesn't necessarily make much sense anyway. But regardless, this team is awful and not going anywhere, so it is a chance to make guys acknowledge their mistakes. When you bring in a situational reliever, he needs to execute. Issuing a walk out of the gates should be deemed unacceptable. I'd applaud him if he immediately yanked the pitcher there. There's been way too many times when he should have done that in the past to set a standard.
And yesterday leaving Maya in to face the lefty after two walks, then bringing in Slaten to face the righty? So stupid.
Riggleman is like all the bad of Frank Robinson without any of the good.
I have to assume he is the manager they want because he will be an apologist for the lineup, keep all the crappy veterans happy, and not make any waves with the FO over the crappy roster they assembled.
