I think there's more to the Dunn situation than the fans know about.  His work ethic and dedication to improvement has been questioned in the past.

JP Ricciardi

Again:  I'm not saying Ricciardi is right about Dunn.  I think Dunn was great for the Nationals the last two years.

That sounds exactly like the LeBron James backtrack. I'm not saying that I believe a certain thought, but I'm just saying...

We aren't going to compete next year, with or without Adam LaRoche.  His impact on the field will not be big enough to justify paying him $8 million.  He's an average player, not an important piece to the puzzle.
The real question: will he be markedly better than we have now or who else we might get? I say yes.

Is he going to bring the Nats a WS championship? No. But will he help us win more games. Yes. It's about getting better no matter how incremental that is.

Or like the JP Ricciardi retraction.

What if TB offers him 5 million?  If I were him, I might take that.

Next year's 1B market will be stacked, though.  All the guys who took one year deals plus potentially Pujols and Fielder.

TB is not going to be as good. I know their rotation is good, but I just have a feeling.

I would have liked to have Dunn back.  I do wonder why teams don't seem to value him, though.  He's a great value at 1B.  His defense was good enough.  Not great, or even good, but passable given his offensive production.

As a DH, I'm not sure.  Vlad Guerrero and a handful of others could give what Dunn will give at DH at a fraction of what Dunn signed for.

Looking at LaRoche a bit more - he's hovered around 140 or so strikeouts a year for his career.  That's much better than last year's 170 and I think a lot more reasonable given the rest of his offensive strikeouts.  I can live with 170 plus strikeouts if he's giving us 35 homeruns and .500 SLG.  Not at 25 homeruns and .465 or whatever he was at last year.

Now just sign him already.

I'm pretty sure we don't want LaRoche that badly.  He's just in the right place at the right time, being essentially the only 1B option in free agency

Then who did they want and why didn't they sign him instead of putting themselves in this situation?

1. Sign LaRoche. Enough time!! Three years, two years...so what? I doubt Rizzo is trying to bargain LaRoche down, since the difference is trivial.

2. Repeat: Nick J as pinch-hitter and backup 1B, though I hope the Nats don't have to depend on him at 1B ever

3. Drop N Morgan. Truly: addition by subtraction. He might have skills, but he is a lousy baseball player. Doesn;t have the mind/psyche for it. (Throws glove???? Neglects to slide and score a run juts so he can shoulder a catcher???)

4. Get a starter, even Pavano (although I've seen him...or mostly didn't see him with the Yankees...and he is not Bob Gibson II)

5. I don't care whether the Nats spend $75 million or $60 million or $100 million in payroll. Just win 80 games in 2011 and 95 in 2012. The point of baseball is to win the games...not to under-spend or over-spend. (I hope Lerner/Rizzo agrees, but they puzzle me sometimes.)

6. Oh, and the lesson of Jack Kent Cooke still stands: if you win, you make a lot more money than if your team loses. (And you get to pump your ego when you receive a trophy.)

If this was true, we would have signed him a month ago.

I don't know.  Jack Kent Cooke cared whether his team won, and that had alot to do with their winning.  I don't think the principle that you make more money if you win has been proven.

How much would the Yankees and their "brand" be worth if they were always a last place team that threatened to lose a hundred games every year?

I do have an uneasy feeling about what Rizzo is doing.   Laroche wants a three year deal, Rizzo knows that no team will give him one and so he'll have to sign with us eventually for two.  But what may happen is that Laroche, who probably isn't excited about the idea of playing here, may decide to sign with some other (mystery) team that offers him a two year deal.  Rizzo should just give him the three year deal and be done with it.

Winning puts fans in the seats.
Puts HOME fans in the seats.
Anyway fans in the seat is but one component of a very complex economic equation.

Lerners certainly don't have an economic model similar to the Yankees and many people have speculated that losing can be more profitable than winning.

By the way, there is a prank video song that is WAAY more hilarious than the rickroll. It's called the Russian lol song.

The part from 1:25-1:35 makes me pound the table in anguished laughter. Then 1:55 comes and I can't breathe anymore.
