What are you talking about?  You said "following the rules."  Please show me this rule that says: "the strike zone will be totally precise at all times without exception."  It's discretionary.

see above

Quote
The STRIKE ZONE is that area over home plate the upper limit of which is a horizontal line at the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants, and the lower level is a line at the hollow beneath the knee cap. The Strike Zone shall be determined from the batter's stance as the batter is prepared to swing at a pitched ball.

The problem with the Nats pitchers is they all throw junk...have to be very fine with it and when they get into a wild streak and HAVE to throw a strike, they get hammered.  Who is the hardest thrower on the staff right now?   Does anyone throw a cutter which seems to be the new unhittable pitch in baseball?  I guess Stammen throws reasonably hard but he has to keep the ball down.  None of the Nats pitchers have any room for error and a good hitting team like the Phils eat them up and spit em out.

So, I'm listening to this game, but totally not paying attention. Sorry to hijack the game thread all, but it's opening day and I wanted to engage in some interesting conversation and this game blows, sigh

Sure, but that's not a surprise, right? I mean it's painful, but it's not exactly surprising.

Oh I would expect 100 more of these games this season. It's going to be brutal.
If this keeps up, Strasburg and Storen better be called up. This is just one game. Let's see how we are after 7...it's hard to be worse than 0-7.

Yes, please show me the guarantee of precision there.  Hell, it doesn't even specify the area of home plate that determines the call.  Is it the front of the plate, the back side, or does it have to be over at least 50% of it?

Batista reminds me of "Iodine" Tavarez from last year

Hey now don't talk bad about my boy Julian!  (He had a few good moments for you guys!)

you're right, surely there is no way to tell is a ball crosses home plate at a given height.

Desmond overmatched by a guy like Halladay but he has to take his lumps and learn how to hit the best pitchers.

Well, it is the Phillies, not the Pirates.  Still a lot more baseball to be played.

I'm asking at which part of home plate does it have to be at the specified height?

Okay, so it has to be from below the kneecaps to the letters.  Well, where?  What if the ball crosses that plane at the very backside of home plate, even though it was too high as it was over 95% of the plate?

No, it doesn't. The batter's position may change, but his strike zone would not. It's on him if he wants to move closer to the plate, or further from the plate. The strike zone is established by the height of the player as it relates to the HOME PLATE, an always stationary object, not as it relates to the batter's position.

The low part of the strike zone never changes for a player, but the top part can.

A player's height has nothing to do with it. A tall player can bend down and change his strike zone.

I love that Riggs is burning through the bullpen in a 11-1 game.

Nice.

I actually think it is a smart move to get Burnett out there.  He had a bad spring, you want him to try to get things going before you start using him in meaningful situations.  Also, they have a day off tomorrow.  Not really a big deal.

then what does the ump base the calls on? Baseball already trusts the technolog enough to use it to score umps, why not just use it.

jesus christ lannan wtf. thankfully hell never start another opening day again. it gets painful to watch us go to the bullpen with batista, bergmann, and then the likes of walker, capps.

damn phillies fans who never watched baseball till october 08. its tough when most of the city is orioles fans and other cities fans. we get it your home town is boring and not important at all so you have to come to a real city like d.c. to make a living. no need to boo your new cities players.

this will all change tho once we get harper and strasburg up and we get a bunch of bandwagon fans ala the capitals.
