They traded Juan Rivera and Maicer Izturis for Guillen.

Still, 2 useful players for one with an attitude. I remembered that as soon as I posted.

Nice outing for Capps.

I was listening to XM175 the other day and they had a great interview with Tony LaRusa. He had some really good comments about not falling in love (or out of love) with any player during the first half of ST, and how overall the first half is pretty meaningless statistically. That period is all about guys getting the work in, and the games have some crazy matchups and the box scores can be impacted by which way the wind is blowing on a given day.

I couldn't find a good source of first-half vs. 2nd half ST stats, but it would be useful. I think MZ had a post of those splits for the relief outings recently. Not surprising it showed Bergmann regressing a bit while others were stepping up.

It's nice to see the team overall have a better 2nd half and some key guys show steady improvement. There's been some nice separation and some guys are getting into shape at the right time. I think it is the right attitude to write off the first half stats if a guy is showing good performance as the ST closes out. On the flipside, you have guys like Maxwell, who could have played himself into consideration with a better second half and never got it going.

I spent most of 2005 listening to games on the radio or MLB audio, and yet it was still awesome.

I thought you were supposed to shoot yourself if you have anything less that 24/7 HD?

Damn contrarian.

Still, 7 hits in 5 innings.

Zero walks, works out to a 1.32 WHIP in 5.1 IP.  Not a bad appearance.

After today's game things are looking pretty decent for the team right now.  The starting rotation looks solid with legitimate front end prospects on the way.  The pen looks like it will be okay instead of the atrocity it was the first half of last year.  The top 5-6 spots in the lineup look to be very good (and RF could make 7 if someone steps up and runs with it).  Our lesser players are better than others who have filled those roles the past two years.

Best stat of ST so far:  1.241.  That is Zimmerman's OPS currently.  He obviously won't do that for the season but it looks like the final step to elite hitter, and .900+ OPS is going to happen at age 25 for him.

If Pudge somehow reverts to something close to his offensive form of 6 years ago we'll be a pretty potent offensive team with improving defense and pitching.  Thank you Rizzo and company for at least attempting to build a solid team from nearly nothing.

Bergmann lets two inherited runners score, 5-1 fish.

Another weak outing by Mock and another weak performance by Bergmann as the Spring wraps up.

Sorry, I'm ok with them keeping an old terrible pitcher instead of a young promising one because he was good 7 years ago. Never mind.

Has Bergmann officially made the team? And has English officially been cut?

PA you have already stated your satisfaction with Macdougal, no need to repeat it.

They aren't even competing for the same spots, though.  English is trying to stay on as a LOOGY (he is only pitching an inning per ST game), Batista as a long man (he is pitching 2-4 innings a spring training game).  And Batista isn't nearly as bad as you make him out to be.  He isn't a starter anymore, but he is still a decent enough reliever especially if he is only filling the mop-up role.  I don't see what the big fuss is about.

They were looking at English as a long man. He's started and relieved in the minors. A lefty swingman is bonus, isn't it?

Has he pitched more than one inning at a time in ST?
