Nice outing for Capps.
I was listening to XM175 the other day and they had a great interview with Tony LaRusa. He had some really good comments about not falling in love (or out of love) with any player during the first half of ST, and how overall the first half is pretty meaningless statistically. That period is all about guys getting the work in, and the games have some crazy matchups and the box scores can be impacted by which way the wind is blowing on a given day.
I couldn't find a good source of first-half vs. 2nd half ST stats, but it would be useful. I think MZ had a post of those splits for the relief outings recently. Not surprising it showed Bergmann regressing a bit while others were stepping up.
It's nice to see the team overall have a better 2nd half and some key guys show steady improvement. There's been some nice separation and some guys are getting into shape at the right time. I think it is the right attitude to write off the first half stats if a guy is showing good performance as the ST closes out. On the flipside, you have guys like Maxwell, who could have played himself into consideration with a better second half and never got it going.
