It ain't working.

I have no idea what that number combination is so sadly I think I am not half the nerd he thinks I am. Probably more quarter-nerd.

Is she really? I've never met her so I never knew. Well in that case, maybe Bergmann should be kept around.

Let's avoid talking about the SSS (6 out of 8? Really?). Yes, he does give you a QS around 58% of the time for 3 out of the past 4 years, the big outlier being his 8 starts in Colorado in 2008.*  That means he's shelled more like 2 out of 5 times. His IP/start has steadily declined since 2005 - (7 -> 6.4 -> 6.2 -> 5.8 -> 5.9).  That's a third of an inning more than our staff average.  he is what he is, not what he was. he's not had a full season WHIP below 1.5 since 2006, and his ERA+ maxed at 91 for a season since that time.

At this point in his career, he is nothing more than cannon fodder.  There may be a place for that if every other option out there fails badly, and if Marquis or Lannan gets hurt I'd maybe even want him out there taking his lumps, but let's drop this idea that we need him taking the ball 35 times along with Lannan and Marquis.  There really is not much basis for the notion that every staff has to have 5 guys go 180 IP. There really is not much of a basis for saying most staff split 600 IP among 3 players anymore (I've done posts on this looking at 2009 across MLB).  We can get our 930 - 960 IP out of 6 to  8 starters, like most NL teams, without a third innings eater.

I'm willing to take a chance on a few failures among the Mock / Chico / Balester / Martin / Stammen / Martis / Olsen / eventually Detwiler / eventually Wang in lieu of the known submediocirty Livan is.  Nwo if you told me he is Lannan / Marquis insurance, then I am on board and hope he enjoys Syracuse.

* for fun and amusement, if you add Livo's 2 SSS outliers together - last year's 6 QS / 8 GS DC with the 3/8 in Colorado, miraculously you get 56%.

Basically.

I hope you are happy, Chief. You got what you wanted.

I was hoping we would not have to rely on another has-been in our MLB rotation. I thought we were moving on from that garbage.  :|

Charge in blindly and wail and gnash your teeth before you even read anything, is that it?  It's a minor league deal and I've already said I hope he doesn't make the rotation because of what it would mean about the quality of our pitching.

Nobody earns their name like you.

If you believe Livan, he's been pitching hurt pretty much since 2006, but finally feels healthy now. He's worth a look, at least for until Strasburg and Wang kick down the door.
