Talked to McCatty today, and he didn't seem as down on Olsen's progress as Olsen seemed to be. He also said there's still plenty of interest in Shairon Martis. That's a guy I'm interested in, just because we haven't heard much about him since he started so well last year. But McCatty said he's still in the mix for a spot.

How serious is Martis about baseball? Why would he show up to camp out of shape AGAIN? Surely that's not a good way to make an impression on the bosses after a terrible 2009.

Lannan - Holding steady as a mortal lock
Martis - strong early showing, moving up
Olsen - not close to being ready for the opening day rotation.

In an exchange of tweets with a Sportsfan (why does that name sound familiar???) Ladson indicated Stammen might be the #3 starter.  Not sure where this surge of optimism comes from.

Olsen had shoulder surgery 7 days prior to Wang. I can't imagine how anybody could expect him to be ready that much quicker than Wang.

Good question, wish I had a good answer.  Considering how tight-lipped teams/players are about injuries I doubt if we'll ever know. Olsen accepting a huge pay cut is probably a better indicator of the severity of his surgery than any thing I could dig/make up.

I didn't see a post surgery article on Wang, but they had different issues.  Olsen supposedly had a relatively minor labrum surgery (is there such a thing?).

Surgery Thursday on Olsen's left shoulder, then, confirmed a best-case scenario: Team doctor Wiemi Douoguih repaired a small tear of Olsen's left labrum and saw no further damage. Douoguih had said before the surgery that, in about 10 percent of similar cases, surgery reveals more extensive shoulder problems.

"Olsen's surgery went well," acting general manager Mike Rizzo said. "As little damage as could be expected was in there. Sometimes you go in there and you find some stuff that was unexpected. This was all expected, and it's as minimal as can be."

As a result, the Nationals expect Olsen to begin a throwing program within six to eight weeks. Though Olsen has no chance of returning to the mound this season, Rizzo said that Olsen will be ready for spring training.

PETERSBURG - Chien-Ming Wang's season is officially over. Can the same be said for his Yankees career?

Wang will undergo athroscopic surgery to repair the capsule (the fibrous membrane that surrounds the joint) in his right shoulder Wednesday, a procedure that will knock him out for the rest of the year.

The Yanks said there would be no timetable for his return until the surgery is complete, leaving his prognosis for 2010 up in the air.

I didn't see a post surgery article on Wang, but they had different issues.  Olsen supposedly had a relatively minor labrum surgery (is there such a thing?).

I have no clue which would be worse. And as we all know, minor surgery is any surgery performed on somebody other than ourselves.

Here's the first link I found with the google. That's some pretty small number statistics. But it sounds like a hard to diagnose condition.
