I'll concede the Cuban birth certificate point, though I still don't see how Livan is only 34. If no one told you his age before, everyone would guess he is at least 36-37.

Okay this has nothing to do with this offseason and is all speculation but I totally forgot about him.

Brandon Webb was discussing free agency next year and supposedly wants to be close to home... well kinda... DC is close to home

I think it's a fair question as to whether Livan has ever produced a birth certificate. His escape from Cuba perhaps did not permit the carrying of full documentation, and so perhaps no-one here has seen his birth certificate. However, I doubt he was a complete unknown while playing in Cuba. They have highly organized baseball, including age specific leagues like we do for youths, so if somebody had something on him I'd think it would have been outed by now.

Chapman is a big deal because he someone got to take his passport with him. When you defect, it's hard.

Nationals Interested In Randy Winn

Winn hit .262/.318/.353 last year, but has appeal because of his glove (He added more defensive value than all but three outfielders in 2009, despite his age).

The Nationals have Josh Willingham, Nyjer Morgan and Elijah Dukes in the outfield, so adding Winn would probably mean dealing Willingham or reducing Dukes' role.

Winn's still one of the best defensive outfielders in the majors. I don't think we need him, but I wouldn't be pissed if we got him and then traded Willingham for a pitcher.

If we're thinking of trading Willingham, it makes sense.
If he's just here to "Be a Mentor" to Dukes and Maxwell or something like that, well, we're already paying enough guys to be mentors...

But I'd only do it if we did not have to kick in too much bucks. I think Arroyo is better than Davis, so I'd just figure out how much extra I'd be willing to pay for Arroyo. If we gave Cinci say $3m of salary relief and a back of the rotation guy, is that better than signing Davis for $2.5m and giving no one? Dunno.

Or he's confident he's back and he doesn't want the past to ruin the future. Sheets is a gamble worth taking. The reward outweighs the risk.
