I'll tell you what, if we can sign Capps that finally gives us a credible bullpen...

let's wait on that statement until we close a few games in April, OK?

Quote
ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick spoke with the agent for pitcher Matt Capps, who said the Washington Nationals, fresh off their signing of Jason Marquis, are a strong contender to land Capps' services.

Crasnick writes, "Agent Paul Kinzer said the Nationals weren't a factor when Capps began considering his options as a free agent. But Washington is now among the leading candidates to sign Capps because of the efforts of general manager Mike Rizzo."

The idea of Capps is a good one for the Nationals, whose record was much worse than the other talent on the field due to a ludicrously bad bullpen. With Capps' strikeout rate right around his career norms, it would be surprising not to see him post an ERA closer to his career mark of 3.61 than his 2009 mark of 5.80. Of course, even a little improvement from Capps would help- the Nationals posted a bullpen ERA of 5.09 last season.

Hold the freak up... how can you claim Capps is a winner when he's been on a terrible team his whole career yet it doesn't work the same way with Dunn.

You can't even figure out when you contradict yourself anymore.

Free agent right-hander Matt Capps will make a decison on Wednesday night. It's between the Cubs and the Nationals.

To be fair, Morgan claimed he was a winner, not SF.

I wish death and destruction on the entire Chicago Cubs organization.

Yanks are trading Gaudin. The Nats should have picked him up on waivers last year - I have no idea why they didn't. He's another warm body innings eater.

Who gets cut for Marquis?

To be fair, Morgan claimed he was a winner, not SF.

But he quoted it to 'show' Capps was a winner... which according to SF, he clearly wouldn't be because he's never won anything.

Also, SF was talking crap about Capps when he was first brought up... hell the same with Marquis.

bwahahaha bernadina is not good.
Why is he on the 2010 Nationals' Baseball calendar? I know that is off-topic, but his picture is one of the twelve months on the Nationals calendar. I don't get that - it's not like he is a regular starter? Is it a prediciton of the future or of things to come?

( Side Note: 2010 Nationals Baseball Calendar available at Shoppers Food Warehouse, marked $14.99, but they discount and are selling it for $10.99)

So according to Blob Wadson, it's between the Cubs and us and Capps announces in 30 hours.

This sounds like a game show.

Also, we should sign/trade for someone tonight for good measure, just to show Capps we mean business.

I didn't see an article on this but I may have missed it. Just a note from MLBTR

"Harlan writes that the Nationals were hoping to sign Jon Garland, before turning to Jason Marquis. "

I don't know whether to take it that we don't have interest in him anymore and then Marquis is our only SP sign or if we still do but decided to hop on Marquis.

The article basically said Garland wanted to pitch on the west coast.

not so sure he is an innings eater.  He is a 4th starter type, but has spent much of his career as a reliever.  He's help.  A good slider - IIRC, either ESPN or BA rated him as having one of the best in baseball.  he's gone over 150 IP once in his career (2007), his first full year as a starter.  Hurt in 2008.

His agent says he wants to sign with a winner - any indication the Cubs are going to be any different this year than the last oh....100 or so??

Burbles MacGuffin says that we are still interested in Orlando Hudson. If Hudson signs, Guzman will stay at shortstop, which means either they trade him or Desmond spends some time at AAA.

IF the Nats sign Hudson, it will be very difficult for Rizzo to trade Guzman without eating a good portion of his 2010 contract. I can see the Nats eating a couple million, but enough to get him dealt, I cant see happening. The good if a Hudson signing, means that Guzman at short will have a gold glove on both sides, which is a whole lot better than what the Nats have had the past few years. Also, if they sign Hudson, I hope it's for at least two years, with anything more being vested on performance.

Signing Hudson would be awesome. Having him and then Desmond when he becomes the everyday guy just makes our lineup better.

Adding Hudson to 2nd probably lowers the team ERA by .100.

Hudson is an overrated defender. According to UZR, even Ronnie Belliard was a better defender than him last year by a decent margin. There has to be a reason why a Nationals outcast like Belliard started over Hudson in the playoffs.
