I'm guessing Rizzo didn't want to give up a pick for Gonzalez, which I agree with.

Yes.  1st pick, 2d round may be valuable.  13 players were offered arbitration, 3 accepted, I believe.  That means our first pick in the 2d round will be no worse than #40.  I can see a reluctance to give that up.  It looks like the Os paid top dollar and made a couple of year commitment to a guy who is injury prone.  They did need the lefty, but if Uehara / Johnson could have closed, then this is not a great signing.

Oh crap, forgot about that. Id still take him but the first pick could very well be valuable.

JCA, didn't the Rangers fail to sign their first rounder? that would put us at 41 then. . .

In response to this, I wanted to find a smiley getting tomatoes thrown at him but I couldn't find one.

We need to get one of those.

Come to think of it, I think the NYY did not sign their  pick either.  So #42, and if teams hold off on signing some of the free agents like last year (Sheets, Grudzielanek) or if guys resign with their original team (Manny last year), that pick gets better.

[edit on 12/21 - I'm wrong about the NYY. That was last year.  This whole time space continuum things sometimes has me mixed up]

Too all the "LETS SIGN X PLAYER NOW!":

How can we be sure that there is not already an initial offer on the table for the likes of Marquis, Garland, Capps, etc?

... They are good though?

They needed a 3b to play for atleast half the year.. thats why they signed him to a 1 year deal.

I wish we went after Gonzalez as well.

Atkins is a very bad fielder.  A half season of him at 3B is a half season wasted.

As for Gonzalez, he was my first pick among relievers this offseason, but not at 12m with incentives up to 16m for just two years.

If thats currently so, then its up to the players. But how do we know there is? All I'm saying is they better get one out quick. If there is then im satisfied, if there isn't than they're risking a chance to get two pitchers.

This is all based on the news released, none. All we see is 'blah blah we have a wishlist'. So I'm just saying make a damn offer.

I still fail to see how not signing Atkins would be a better move them? He may be a bad fielder, which sucks downgrading from Mora, but who else are they going to slot there? Anyways, its just the damn Os up north and to me its a decent signing. to me, you can say, oh he sucks etc etc, but what I''m saying isn't fact. I just think its a good pickup to hold them for a few months.

Think of all of the REALY GOOD GMs in the game today and ask yourself how many of them negotiate in the media.

They did sign Hinckley, who could give Roberts a run for the money when it comes to attracting the Dundalk babes.

You have no idea if offers have been made or not.  We have been rumored to be in on several guys and that's all the indication you'll get.  If Rizzo starts negotiating publicly he should be fired on the spot.

As for Atkins, how is signing a guy who can't field or hit a good thing even if it's just for a few months?

who else are they going to put out there?

His fielding stats don't look to bad. Avgs 955-960 Fielding %  Not the best but serviceable.

His UZR and UZR/150 are atrocious.  He doesn't have good enough range and commits too many errors on the balls he does get to.  His fielding % is roughly in line with a guy like Zim, but he doesn't cover anywhere near the ground that Zim does.  Atkins is very, very bad defensively.  He can't hit outside of elevated drunk park.
