We have spread our tentacles to the Angels and the Sox organizations and are awaiting bigger fish to confirm bigger statements. The Nationals (Lerners) have plenty of money. That has never been the issue.
That's what I was thinking, how do billionaires not have any money?

SG, I agree but the Nats have already burned bridges here with their money management and interactions with the DC government. I do think they probably have the high bid right now but it escapes me why they would sacrifice so many other ways of building the franchise on just one player. Making him the face of the franchise I understand but they have more holes to fill than we do and their farm system is weaker. I would think the money could be spent on better options. Every criticism of the wisdom of the O's bidding high for Tex is appropriate for the Nats but even more so since they have even farther to go to be a factor than we do. I think if I was Bowden, I would have made the symbolic offer to get our name in the game for Tex and then bowed out and tried to sign Dunn. But I am obviously not Bowden so on we go to another chapter in this saga!

anyone agree with this?

I think you could make an argument that Tex fits into our long-term plans a bit more than in DC.

DC is basically rebuilding an entire organization from the bottom up over again. They should be investing heavily in the draft and in minor leagues. Right now their system is loaded with C+, B- talent and no one that projects to be a top-flight threat in the major leagues.

The Orioles have some top-flight guys coming up in the next one-three years. They have been rebuilding the minors over the last three-four years and they are beginning to bear fruit. We could theoretically be ready to compete in two to three years without Tex, the same can not be said for the Nats.

I guess he missed where our farm system was ranked 9th?

maybe not.

most of our prime talent is in the lower half of our minor league system.

but then again, I don't think their farm system is really as good as they say theirs is.

they've got Wieters, Matusz, Adam Jones and.....?

Put Strasburg on our farm and we're just that much better right off the bat -- the Os farm is further ahead of course -- and they did load up on the bedard trade -- but we're hardly an empty cupboard anymore ...

OMG CNNSI Reporting that The Orioles and Angels WERE NOT contacted on Thursday.

Teixeira also has been pursued by the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals, and met before the winter meetings with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman. Officials of the Orioles and Angels said Boras had not been in contact with them on Thursday.

Wonder if they made assurances to Tex about our draft picks?

Considering that Strasburg is also a Boros client -- I would imagine that was part of the discussions ...

Nope. The O's system is no slouch but several of the pitchers they have developed in recent years have been busts (Garrett Olson, Radhammes Liz just to name a few). I believe in our system, it's just going to take a few years although we have already started to see the results (Lannan, Balester, Martis(trade)).

I think that's the point being made. By almost all accounts, the O's have at least four in MLB's top 50, Wieters, Matusz, Tillman and Arrieta.

Not signing Crow is a big hit in the eyes of most who try and rank systems.

i put it at 50% chance the Nats win it with 200 million (pick your years) and 50% chance the Yankees paid 250 million (maybe 300). the yankees might not need him, but they might do it for spite and put him in CF

Van Pelt from sportscenter just said something that pissed off some folks at OH.

I'm not watching ESPN, so anyone got a clue?

I will offer this....I swear on the lives of all that matter in my life that the Nats sources is high up and VERY credible. We have a source with another organization, from which I am awaiting confirmation of other things we know but feel better getting confirmation before we publish.

ok,

but do you, as an Orioles fan, think that the Orioles are SOOOOOO far ahead of the Nationals on the road to contention, like the folks at OH seem to?

to them it is inconceivable that we have ANY talent *at all* anywhere in our system, majors or minors.

being someone who pays more attention to the Nationals than the average baseball fan, I find that to be laughable. especially since 8 out of our 9 opening day starters spent significant time on the DL last season, Dukes only played half a season(literally), and such.

in fact, our projected lineup with Tex in it, isn't really as bad as people assume it will be.

what do you think?

It is correct that most of our main talent are in Single A and lower although that could quickly change in 2009.

Our talent in the upper minors: Leonard Davis, Bill Rhinehart, Roger Bernadina, Jordan Zimmermann, Marco Estrada, Tyler Clippard, Adrian Alaniz, Justin Maxwell, and maybe a few more. None superstars but there are some definite Major Leaguers in that crop.

Most of our high upside guys are in A ball although a few could make it to AA this season (i.e. Detwiler).

I think we can all read between the lines here and i am very excited.  i hope you are tellinng the truth....we are the most abused and battered MLB fan base so we deserve some good news!!
