I mean, is it Boone's fault that Kahnle didn't throw strikes?

Boone's fault for giving Holmes one battger, best I remember. And then for pitching Kahnle.

Smoltz seems oddly clueless about things sometimes.  A starter pitching an inning on what would be his bullpen day is pretty common in postseason.  We did that a bunch of times in 2019.

Smoltz pitched twice in relief in the 1999 NLCS when he was still a starting pitcher. You'd think that'd be the thing he'd know.

It's actually not that common. Also, Buehler just came off recovery from his 2nd TJS

It shows how much depth you can buy when your payroll is hundreds of millions more than average teams

But the Yankees didn't have that depth, despite a huge payroll.

Did they really use money to buy Edman and Kike?

They had enough to get to the World Series

Reluctantly the Yankees in 6. Though I really like the Dodgers versus the evil empire. Dodgers don't have the starting pitching .

Not even close. Roberts did a masterful job of cobbling together a pitching staff to shut down the Yankees.

The Yankees had a good chance to win Game 1. And they would have won last night if not for the defensive meltdown. They weren't exactly blown out.

Yankees: failure of a team built around home runs and walks, and "short porch" on the LF and RF lines. Maybe it is not so bad to put the ball in play.

Wash your mouth out with soap for saying that. Defense is really important but you do need to hit above .200. Eddie Brinkman is the only guy who could play year after year below .200.

This is a heck of a read:
https://nypost.com/2024/10/31/sports/yankees-world-series-failure-started-with-fundamental-issues/

Basically the Dodgers scouts told the team that the Yankees were a fundamentally poor team prone to making mistakes and to just put the ball into play. They note that the Yankees overall put up better offensive numbers than LA, but were done in by their mistakes.

Quote
What the Dodgers told their players in scouting meetings was the Yankees were talent over fundamentals. That if you run the bases with purpose and aggression, the Yankees will self-inflict harm as was exposed by Betts, Tommy Edman, Freddie Freeman, etc. That the value was very high to put the ball in play to make the Yankees execute. They mentioned that the Yankees were not just the majors’ worst baserunning team by every metric, but the difference was vast on the field between them and the Padres, who the Dodgers beat in the NL Division Series, but were impressive in this area.

They were thrilled at how short Yankee leads were at first base to potentially be less of a threat on pivots at second, where Gavin Lux does not excel. They said their metrics had the Yankees as the worst positioned outfield. They were amazed how many times relay throws came skittering through the infield with no one taking charge and how often Jazz Chisholm Jr., for example, was out of place or just standing still when a play was in action.

Also, Freeman played the WS with torn cartilage in his ribcage.

And if Freddy doesn't hit those home runs and Judge doesn't drop that ball none of it matters much.  Smoltz did comment during the game on the Soto short lead at first.

It's been like this since the 90's. A salary floor would do wonders.

Otherwise I don't see what's the point of certain fans cheering on their poverty-ridden franchises (ie Pirates, Marlins, etc)
