I'd like Joc Pederson. Feel like we can carve out a short side platoon option for DH
Offer him a lifetime fantasy football commisionership.

Joc would be good. Especially if Chaparro or Yepez could pair with him.

I've wondered about Bregman too, but I imagine he would be very expensive.

Bregman gonna cost Rendon money. We'd probably have to trade House and some other pieces to get what the team needs.

No, I think its prettu obvious Rizzo wont be allowed to hand out monster deals. Joc Pederson is probably as good as it gets. Figure he signs Nick Pivetta or Trevor Williams to one year deal. Fills out the rest with a couple bullpen arms.

That's correct.  Mini Me's not about to pay Bregman, nor should he.  But he's an FA so no trade would be needed.

Those rankings are generally meaningless anyway.  What matters is performance once they break into MLB, and that often varies wildly in both directions as we've seen with this team.  The 2019 Nats would have had a highly ranked system if they had MacKenzie Gore and Keibert Ruiz then, who were 15th and 36th overall respectively, in addition to having two top 25's in Victor Robles and Carter Kieboom.

For a team that hasn't managed to achieve a .450 win percentage in 5 seasons, the system is well behind where it should be, especially with all the rentals its brought in to flip at the deadline.  Crews, House, and Brad Lord won't be enough to turn this thing around, especially as rookies and with the weak coaching staff returning.
No crap? If only I didn't have a ton of posts in 2021-2022 saying Rizzo deserved red hot heat for the dysfunction of the Farm System? And posts in 2023 pointing out it was pitiful after a couple fire sales that the system as middle of the pack at best?

It's possible to have a discussion about this franchise without having to turn every thread into an "Everything sucks" whine session.

Congratulations, but tell me exactly how was Rizzo held accountable for this?

He wasn’t. In hindsight, they should have fired everyone after 2022 but ownership change prevented that. Since then, I think overall things have been pretty solid on his end. I can think that even I think a change should have been made after 2022.

2027:

C - Ruiz
1B - House/Morales
2B - CJ Abrams
3B - Tena/House/Morales/???
SS - Seaver King
LF - Garcia Jr.
CF - Crews
RF - Wood
DH - Chapparo/Yepez?

It's not that awful.

Going to be interesting to see how the rotation shakes out next year.

Locks: Gore, Irvin, Parker
Contenders: Herz, Stuart, Cavalli (if healthy), Lara, Lord, Rutledge

And that's without a FA signing (or two).

A starting five of FA, Gore, Irvin, Parker, and Stuart would be fine, assuming Gore returns to form. Start Cavalli in Rochester until he's hopefully ready at some point.

I suspect they might sign Trevor Williams to a team friendly contract.

Yes, even if they sign Williams they need to get a serious starter for next year.

Why in the world would you move House?   He has gold glove ability at third

Not sure how anyone can say that after all we heard about were the accolades of James Wood's defense in the outfield.

Also, if Cayden Wallace can be an above average major league hitter (like wRC+ of 105 or more), House is definitely moving to first base.

Two major questions: Will the Lerners consider the deferred money separate from the active payroll? How much AAV can the Nationals add and still keep up with the young players future arbitration earnings?

Finngann, Garcia, Gore, and Gray are the only players going into arbitration next season that will get any substantial amount of money. Finnegan is probably 8 million. Garcia will double his, so maybe 4 million? I can't imgaine Gore and Gray getting more than 3 million each.

Say you bring back Rainey, Law, and Vargas at 2 million each. Don't bring back Weems. Riley Adams shouldn't cost you more than a million dollars. Same for Mason Thompson, given he's simply recovering from TJS. That's pretty much it.

Figure all the pre-arb guys cost you roughly 15 million. Puts payroll around 51 million.

Are they counting Strasburg's re-structured contract to be part of this active payroll? We know the Lerners didn't get the insurance. THe original contract deferred 26.6 a year to the three years after his deal ended (2027, 2028, 2029). It was reported that it was further restructured with more deferrals as part of his retirement, but no definitive number given. The Nationals also have deferral payments to Max Scherzer (15 million in 2025, 2026, and 2027) and Corbin (10 million in 2025). For estimation purposes, we'll say that Strasburg's contract was restructured to 20 million a year through the 2030 season.  I also think that it's fair to assume that Max and Corbin's deferred amounts were put into escrow somewhere, but I'm going to assume that, at best, the Nationals only put the original 80 million deferred, so that 20 million a year is probably coming out of the current revenue stream.

So my rough estimate is that active payroll that has to be paid by an existing revenue stream is about 75 million. Nationals revenue has been 350+ million this year and the previous two. They garnered 322 million in 2021. This revenue stream seems more than sufficient to support an increase in payroll. But I think the thing to remember is that all of our young core will be in be in 2nd and 3rd arbitration in 2027 and 2028. That kind of payroll alone would eclipse 100 million rather quickly.

I do too.  But the coaches returning is a big problem.  Can rearrange the deck chairs with players but this team will likely continue to give away outs like no one else in MLB, play sloppy defense, and not adjust to being scouted.

I have some hope for the d. Right now, 2 guys are being asked to play positions they haven't played regularly: Tena and Wood. I also expect Crews to be an upgrade over Thomas to be sure and likely Call's most recent play. It comes down to cj, imo. I expect more from him
Ruiz I think will never be an asset
