I don’t think you consider moving him unless someone makes a surprising offer. I simultaneously think CJ Abrams desperately needs a fresh start but it isn’t the Nats job to give him that when it would be selling at rock bottom value.

The union will want to grieve this if it costs him super 2,but I imagine there would be a ton of dirt raised by the Nats to defend the action

I literally pulled an all-nighter at a casino when I was CJ Abram's age. I was fine: my early-20's body didn't need that much sleep. Hopefully there's more here and the casino incident is just the latest in a string of him not taking his job seriously type incidents, otherwise this has too much of an "unwritten rules Braves" feel to it.

Is there something forbidding this kind of behavior in his (or players' in general) contracts? Otherwise, it's none of their business what he does in his off-hours, if it's legal, right? What if he had been driving all night to visit his sick grandmother and then showed up just before the game?

Sounds like this is not a one'off. Dude drives all night 5times to see grandma before a day game they might put him on a restricted list.

I guess it's a bit of a self-correcting problem. If you're regularly pulling all-nighters it's hard to imagine being able to be major league ready for playing and will likely end up out of a job for pure performance reasons.

In Abrams' case it's especially frustrating given his obvious talent.

Studies have shown that 24 hours without sleep has similar effects on judgement and reaction time as being legally drunk. And while you may have been "fine" to show up to some nominal job, this is athletics at the highest level.

And if he's doing this during the season, before a day game, there's no way this is the first time. CJ has earned this demotion. He should spend the rest of the season doing nothing but working on his defense.

Sad news. Hopefully he bounces back in time for next season. As others have mentioned, trading him now would make no sense as we would be selling low.

What do they expect, really? The league partners with sports gambling. I think it's disgusting the way the televised games are spammed with gambing ads. Kids that watch are bombarded with it.

I don't know how reliable they are, as a source, but the Cubs booth-crew stated that this was only the latest of multiple off-field / clubhouse issues throughout the season.

It wouldnt surprise me. He was butting heads with the coaching staff earlier this year

Going into this offseason, there were already question marks on Abrams who has the worst OAA defense in all of the Major Leagues at -18. His poor defense has caused his team 13-runs per the statistic. Imagine a shortstop that the Nats are facing in Dansby Swanson has saved 12 runs — that is a +30 runs saved from Abrams’ output. That is one run for every game in a month. So yes, the Nats have a real issue with Abrams on the field. Many times the Abrams defense looked like a lack of effort going after balls and poor form. Abrams defense declined from last year when he was a -9 fielder. So why did he get that much worse?

Sounds like this has been an ongoing issue, but who really knows. And to make it worse, Nats PR, as always, is giving out as few details as possible. So this will now be a distraction at least into Spring Training and the lack of facts shared with the public will turn into all kinds of speculation that's going to drive Rizzo and Davey crazy. Even Svrluga and the other lackeys at the Post, plus the 106.7 TheFan crew and the Junkies might, I said might, even ask them challenging questions. There won't be any court testimony, like Keith Hernandez admitting to doing massive amounts of cocaine, so anyone who cares will be stuck speculating.

This will be a very interesting offseason for CJ and the Nats plans for him moving forward. A position switch has to be considered. To either 2b or the outfield. He actually has experience playing CF in his younger days for team USA.

CJ is an all star and should carry himself as such. I know he’s only 23, but he should set an example for Wood and Crews. It’s not like he was an all star this year just because every team gets one and he was our only decent player. He was legit putting up all star numbers and playing like one of the best shortstops in the game. Since the all star break, he’s looked like a different player. Slumping with the bat which magnifies the struggles defensively.

Hopefully he comes to spring training with the right attitude. On a team full of young guys, he’s going to be looked to as a leader.

This story will fade away and come back for one day when ST opens in February. We are the Nationals, not the Yankees.
