So how do we explain this phenomenon?

Easy explanation. samardzija sucked and the Giants “B” bullpen is epic levels of bad.

For sure. Ironic, though, wasn't it...

Dyu think he made the one last night? The usual toothless junior lineup less Zim and Howie (Howie duly got his knock when he pinch hit). Yet they score 15, against 8 in the previous four non-Max starts. (Our other starters could use such help.) So how do we explain this phenomenon? Does DM really have much to do with what happens? Maybe that's the real situation.

No, I meant for the playoff line ups, specifically in reference to Werth starting.

two possible scenarios:

A. Rizzo, with his own contract renewal on the not-too-distant-horizon and his scouting background, dictated the lineups, chose the struggling veteran over any of the other options, and Dusty didn't take one of the many opportunities to swap him out during any of the games

B. Dusty made the lineups, relying heavily on hunches and old-school "he's due for one" logic, and Rizzo stuck to the vanilla "everyone pulling on the same rope" media comments instead of throwing Dusty under the bus

which is more likely?

C.  Rusty posted a lineup that didn't include Werth.  Jayson tore it down from the clubhouse wall and shouted "This crap's changin'."

Gotta go with "B" here.

Rizzo said that Werth was going to get his starting job back before Jayson came off the DL. Rizzo repeatedly sang happy tunes about Werth, much more so than Baker.

Rizzo also said AJ Cole had earned his spot in the rotation. Didn’t stop him from picking up Hellickson anyway and now look where AJ Cole is.

:lmao:

Anything to defend Dusty, I guess. He's the GOAT! Rizzo was deep state'ing the lineups!

Anything a GM says in a media interview is useless noise and should not be taken as real information.

Maddon made several horrible decisions in that playoff series worse than Dusty.  I don't have to defend Dusty his record speaks for itself and this year speaks for itself so far as well.

You put together a season like that 2 seasons like that and you do it with no BP for half a year and injuries for most of the year... and you get fired because of something you did in 1 or 2 games.

Ridiculous.

The lack of Offense is the issue. You can say it's guys on the DL. And slow starts for some.

I see posts with Dusty got bench guys and call ups to play well. Goodwin, Difo, Severino... are playing well this season. Small sample, it's cold, layers...

Long is a well respected coach. For lack of hitting, wouldn't he be the guy to go? That would be a dumb decision.

The Nationals are the only team (right now) that can be considered good. Trades had. Who knows what teams will look like in September.

The offense needs to show up 4 out of 5 games, not 1 out of 5. They'd be winning if they got the offense going. Good news is most can hit. Bad news is they haven't in majority of games.

The "baseball gods" don't like firing a successful manager. The Lerners deserve a losing season for that terrible gaffe.

Oh no, it was sitting Strasburg that angered them.  Wrath of the jinx fairies.

Kill two birds with one stone - hire Ryan Zimmerman as manager.  No more Davey in the dugout.  No more Zim at the plate or throwing snowballs from 1st.

Zimm makes 20 times more than what the Lerner's pay a manager. But, could he be a player manager?
Would he be willing to talk to himself to explain why he must bench himself?

6-14 when our Cy Young winner isn't starting. Every single person who has ever posted on this message board could manage this team to more than six wins in 20 games with Strasburg, Gonzo, and Roark pitching three out of four games. Martinez is worse than having no manager at all. Mark Lerner could do a better job.

If he was betting on the Nats he'd bench himself quick.

Davey is completely flabbergasted and almost seemed choked up. I feel bad for him, he really seems to be floundering.

He looked that way in the dugout for the last inning, too. I'm sure he's embarrassed as hell.

Can dave Martinez stop talking about what he learned from Joe Maddon and what he did with Joe Maddon?

Quote
“I’ve done it before with Joe [Maddon], moving guys around. Just kind of shake it up a bit,” Martinez said. “Howie’s hitting the ball really well. I think Zim’s hitting the ball hard. I just want to shake things up a little.”

To be a Nats' player-manager, you need to be a 2B or SS.
