Confession: Just about every day, while I'm walking out of of the office to go home, I have opened this thread and gone to the last post, and tried to determine if Harper has signed yet by that post. This has been one of the highlights of my month
I'm sorry for starting it on the last day of the season. I never thought it would get this far. Come on Bryce.
That single life
My guess is that the Phillies "Best and Final" is far less than the 10/300+ being kicked around. Maybe 7/$200M. That's a deal the Nats would probably do. Harper can say no, I'm not taking anything less than 10 years, $310M, and he can sit out the season, or he can take the best offer and suffer some degree of humiliation. I wonder if he's really stupid enough to sit out. But leaving the door open is the Nats way of saying, if the best offer you're getting is something we can match, come back to us.
I really question that he has an offer on the table equal to or better than Machado of 10/300. If it was from the Phillies, he'd have signed it already. The Giants have only been said to have discussed shorter-term to date. The Padres met just today to determine if they can even make an offer. Who else besides the Phillies could have made this offer and be holding it up? Is he just waiting around for a knight on a white horse to come in and give him the $, city, ability to win, etc he wants?
Uhhhhhhh ..... married with jids.
wait
Yea and huddle sports twitter confirms Harper is in Arizona tonight meeting with the padres. So Harper is the first player to clone himself. Sources also tell me he will sign two contracts, one for each of him.
That's my take. I was thinking the white knight would be Ted but the more I read about the improved clubhouse without him, I'm starting to change my mind.
This. I've always wanted him back but I'm quite ok if he doesn't come back. Life goes on.
After you've been around a while you realize out that hardly anyone is irreplaceable. Yes there are some athletes that truly are a once in generation players. Bryce is not that person.
To me it’s less about replacing and more about ruining memory/legacy- Harper is not at that stage of caring though, Ovi is the only guy in town who comes close
This. I've always wanted him back but I'm quite ok if he doesn't come back. Life goes on. But if he goes to Philly, he will dread it and he will go down as the most vilified athlete in DC sports history. Yeah, I said that.
Maybe so, but Nats fans really aren't passionate enough (yet) to torment or villify anybody. Once Bryce signs, in a months nobody will remember he missed a week of camp, especially if he is having a good season.
This. I've always said I root for the uniform. But I am hoping that Harper could still possibly be that once in a generation player. But those are the emotions of a fan, and probably not rooted in the reality of the business of baseball.
don't understand your second sentence and disagree with you first. Maybe Nats fans have not shown that passion to vilify an opposing player yet but he will be the first if he goes to the hated Phillies.
