That is incredible.

And to be clear, there's no headspace and rent issues here. Given that it was important for him to break a record, it's pretty funny that he had it for a week or so before it was crushed by someone he was publicly lobbying to come join him.

I'm sure he's enjoying his $340 but - it is pretty funny.

Gio is basically Hellickson at this point. We are creeping close to the Luxury Tax, and adding Gio may have prevented a move at the deadline that could've been made. At this point, I think Gio has no "bounce back" in him and it's all further decline. Him being Hellickson might be a best-case. I'm okay with Fedde/Ross for now if a replacement is needed, and then re-visit at the deadline if need be.

Gio also got himself an opt-out during April. Assuming our rotation stayed healthy to that point, he probably opts out after spending time in Florida anyway. If the Yankees get CC and Severino back as expected, and with German looking promising...he may never pitch for them and opt out there as well.

Gio is significantly better than Hellickson in one important respect: he doesn't get hurt. Hellickson has made 30 or more starts in only 2 of the last 5 seasons. Gio's 4 for 5 in that regard, and the one time he missed it was with 27. Hellickson missed more starts last year than Gio did his entire time in DC.

Yes, but Gio is useless in the post season. And sometimes the #5 starter is needed in the post season when one of the others is injured.

And I think Hellickson is significantly better in one important respect: he seems to have far more success than Gio once or twice through the lineup. Granted, his problem is getting past that point. Gio often doesn't make it past 5 innings because they get to him early.

Not sure why Snell would sign a 5 yr, $50m contract. Would've thought he'd be worth more...but I guess 50 still sets you for life.

he only gave up 1 year of FA and considering he's a SP who is about to make 500k this year and plays a position where one fluke arm injury ends your career, signing a $50 million deal seems really smart

Yes, there's one spot open. I'd also prefer Goodwin, but I wouldn't be surprised if he gets picked up. He is a decent option for an AL bench because he plays CF, but he also might have some fits in the NL if he gets that far (cough, Giants).

Yea I much prefer Goodwin to Stevenson. However, once MAT comes back really soon, Goodwin then doesn't really have a place here until/if someone else gets injured in the OF. So...probably not happening.

I prefer Stevenson. More upside. The lowly Royals waived Goodwin.

Stevenson can't hit. He's almost 25 and is a career .272 hitter with no power in the minors. His career OPS is under .700. The eye test matches the numbers. He doesn't do anything well offensively. He can't hit fastballs, can't hit breaking pitches, can't hit low balls, can't hit high balls. Dude just can't hit.

For example, AAA? .244 with a .637 OPS, and that's in 156 games. Now it's not like he needs to be chucked immediately. But Goodwin's numbers were much better in the minors, and he can actually hit MLB pitching. Stevenson's ceiling is Goodwin, at best.

Goodwin's a decent use of an extra roster spot, at least until he inevitably gets hurt in 3 weeks.

Probably not, but he'd probably take a deal if you said he'd collect MLB paychecks for 3 weeks and then get DFAed and become the first OF up if he passes through waivers and someone else gets hurt.

Best thing the Nats did this offseason was upgrading the catcher position. Having 2 dependable catchers is a huge asset. Wieters and Severino were a black hole last year.
