Classic case, Darold Knowles.  Best reliever the Senators ever had.  Terrible starter.
Gene March traded him for Don Lock.

Romero back from TJS in 2020?

I'd write him off until he shows both the talent and dependability needed to be on the major league radar.

Also with the random AAA guys we have (Williams, McGowin, Voth, and then Crowe in AA and likely AAA by June) I think moving one of Fedde/Voth to relief now is the smart move. We need the help in the bullpen now.

Fastball velocity down
4.48 BB/9 in the regular season
ERA over 5 in the 2018 postseason

Kimbrel is not elite anymore. Paying him like he is would be asking for an albatross contract that will inhibit your flexibility at the deadline

Rediculous. His fastball went down 1.2 MPH. He still averaged over 97 MPH. There could be multiple reasons why is declined.

He has always had high walk #'s. His career average is 3.5. So he averaged 1 more walk per 9. Big deal.

Plenty of pitchers struggle in the postseason. Hell, Scherzer got lit up but does that mean he is done? Regardless, he still got the job done closing out games and didn't blow any. Isn't that what counts?

It's insane to think that guys think he is done after 9 postseason games when he didn't even pitch that poorly.

No sense arguing with these knucks at this point. We'll see if Rizzo signs him soon enough or not.  I'm hoping we do get him.

Those are both big deals for a guy who is 30.

"Didnt pitch that poorly"

Dude, Kimbrel was trash. They won in spite of him. He literally couldn't trusted with a one run lead in the postseason.

Hes not worth going over the luxury threshold and not being able to make deals at the deadline.

Relievers drafted and developed by the Nats who reached the majors with the Nats (since 2005 as Expos history doesn't count):

Organized by draft year

2005 - Craig Stammen
2006 - Cole Kimball
2007 - Ross Detweiler
2008 - Tommy Milone (pitched in relief on his second stint in DC, so it kinda counts)
2009 - Drew Storen
2010 - Sammy Solis
2010 - A.J. Cole (threw in relief a few times before going to the Yankees)
2010 - Matt Grace
2010 - Aaron Barrett
2011 - Taylor Hill
2013 - Austin Voth
2014 - Erick Fedde (sort of)
2014 - Austen Williams
2015 - Koda Glover

I'm not counting guys that appeared as starters for the Nats and became relievers elsewhere.

This list is BRUTAL.  I wanted to sign Stammen before the Padres re-signed him -- there was little interest at the time, which confounded me.  Other than him...Until last year, Grace was AAAA -- but he looks like a HOF pitcher juxtaposed with those bums.

Wow. Trade coming soon?  I though he’s had a decent spring?

Actually: zuck says that we only owed him 1/6th of his salary if we released him today

makes sense but it leaves a spot for a 2nd lefty.

Never understood tending him a contract. Obviously he doesn't have trade value even at 850k. Well at least it's only 142k towards the tax threshold.

The list above just got more brutal, but this release was a year or more overdue.

Disagree. Good research containing important information that is easy to lose track on.

They’re clearing up salary space for Kimbrel. ;)

If Sammy freaking Solis ends up with a sub 2 ERA somewhere else, isn’t it kinda true?

I wrote Treinen off as just needing fresh scenery and we knew that Felipe Rivero had talent when we moved him, but if Solis takes off I think it will require the Nationals to take a long hard look in the mirror.
