you could build a contender with the players that are available on the FA market right now.

LF Gonzales
CF Jones
RF Harper
2B Harrison
1B Duda
SS Machado
3B Moustakas
C Mesoraco

SP: Keuchal, Gio, Bucholz, Miley, Hellickson
BP: Kimbrel, Sipp, Duke, Vincent, Romo, Clippard, Kelley, Diekman

A contender for what?  The pitching (beyond Keuchel and Kimbrel) and defense on that team would be frightening.

Also, it would likely put you over the luxury tax.

Is there a price at which anyone here would bring Gio back?  He’s would be ok as a 5th starter as he guarantees you innings, and as free agent prices have plummeted, I imagine he could be had for a song.

Yes, of course.  $5 million? I don't think he'll go that low, though: remember, Lance Lynn got 3 years at 10mm/year.

no- if you put him on the team, he'd get more starts than anyone would ever want him to get. He has too much history here to be viewed by davey as a fifth starter. Let him go elsewhere to be a fifth starter

Oh sure. Probably less pressure at #5 and that might help him a lot. And he'd give you tons of innings.

An autographed photo of Gio?  You can sell it on eBay for $0.25.  Or wait until he passes away and sell it for $0.50.

Gio should be a good bounce back candidate.   :couch:

As we know all too well, Gio is prone to emotional and mental breakdowns.

Stay far away.

From Rosenthal:

Jack is back! The #Nationals have hired Jack McKeon, 88, as a senior advisor to GM Mike Rizzo, sources tell The Athletic. McKeon’s son, Kasey, works in the Nats’ front office as the team’s director of player procurement.

I guess the title senior advisor is appropriate :couch:

When would a 5th starter have the chance to "choke?"  You wouldn't be pitching him in a deciding playoff game anymore.  I think Gio still gets maybe a decent 2-3 year deal somewhere, and we aren't going to offer the same, but in theory I'd absolutely take him as a #5.

Agreed.  If he's looking for a pillow contract in place he's comfortable in, then I'd offer him 1 year, $6-8MM.  This lets Ross be a multi-inning reliever this year and keeps Fedde and Crow in the minors.  That's OK starting depth. I think he can do better than the money I'm talking about, but I'd give him that.

Without having another durable starter it gets very worrying. If (when) one of Strasburg, Corbin, Sanchez miss time, you need to fill 2 spots with Fedde, Ross, Voth, McGowin, Nuno, etc.
