Sure, but more so for the older guys who have shown some decline. Dozier and Sanchez are bigger gambles in the sense that they have already demonstrated that they may be washed up.

Dozier's batter WAR ranks if he'd been on the Nationals:
2014: 3rd
2015: 2nd
2016: 1st
2017: 2nd

Last year dude had a nagging injury, he's going into his age 32 season, which isn't dead yet.

On a 1 year deal, with potential to be one of the best hitters on the team, for 9 million. You take that gamble every single day. A completely different animal to Howie or Difo.

Yeah, I don't get the hate here. Dude had one bad year at 31, during which he was supposedly hurt. Jayson Werth had a similarly bad year at 32 and then OPSed .827, .931, and .849 the next three years. 31 isn't 35.

I honestly completely forgot that AJ Pollock was a free agent and unsigned (and wanting a big contract) and Dallas Keuchel is still out there.

I was reading a summary of WAR "value" vs what Owners perceive as added value from elite players. The said the Owners equate each win over replacement at $1.5MM in added revenue.

It was on my google news feed and I didn't capture it, but if it wasn't some kid in his mom's basement that wrote it, it does perhaps shed some light on the current state of negotiations.

I wonder if Machado hurt himself by moving to short stop. I don't see a good time wanting to use him there, as he's not very good at it. He makes it complicated by making it seem like he'd pout going back to 3rd base too. That combined with his late season antics probably dropped him out of the super elite free agent category.

That tweet also makes me think that the Nats 300 million offer to Harper might be by the far the highest on the table. Sports economics are due for a correction for a lot of reasons, and ironically MLB owners have more ability to control salary vs the fixed cap linked to revenue share leagues. Free agency salaries have really taken a hit these last couple years as owners wise up to the fact that is not the best way to spend your money and aren't that confident about future revenue streams.

yeah if thats Machados highest offer, it means the Nats must have the highest offer on Harper. Also means the Phillies arent willing to outspend everyone as Nightengale says they are.

What I read was 7 years at 25 million each year. Or 175 million. Not ten years.

I mentioned this a while back but the players wanting ten years with multiple opt outs just doesn’t make sense for teams. Why commit on your end totally to a guy and give him all the options.

Scott Copeland signed. He could be this years version of Jeremy Hellickson.

9W-7L with a 3.43 ERA in 22 starts in AAA last year.
126 IP, 100 KO, 44 BB, 1.389 WHIP

Decent depth player.
