Be nice if he reported to camp in shape for a change...that may make a difference...

Great point. He looked like he had gained 25 pounds last season. Mostly around his gut.

#Diamondbacks will now try to trade Greinke, but he has 15-team no-trade list, prickly rep and included unpaid portion of sign bonus/trade kicker owed $106.5M over next 3 yrs. Will have to eat lots of it and/or take on bad pacts to likely even have a shot

We should trade for him. If for no other reason, than to block the Braves and force them to give up more/better prospects for another SP

I know it will probably put the Nats over the cap or right up against it, but Roark, Taylor, and a prospect not named Robles or Kieboom should work.it gets the DBacks out of two more years of Greinke, and only have to pay one year for Taylor and Roark (I think).

It's a pipe dream that's for sure considering we only have about 20M to spend and we still need a 2B and a 1B but damn:

1- Max Scherzer
2- Patrick Corbin
3- Stephen Strasburg
4- Zach Greinke
5- Joe Ross

Yea, Grienke becomes your number 2 if that trade is made.

What about Jedd Gyorko? He’s a bit expensive (8 million due next year), but he plays all four infield positions, is a lefty and had a wRC+ of 110 last year (.242/.346/.416). He fills the need of the lefty bench bat, and can potentially improve second base if Difo or Kendrick don’t work out as well as we would like. He could also spell Zimmerman at first. The Cards don’t need him as much because they just traded for Goldschmidt and will likely have to move Carpenter to third.

Hell yeah. One of only two Mountaineers in all of MLB.

Seems more likely to me that Wong is the odd man out.  Only plays one position (although does it pretty well), not as much offense, also LH hitter.

Hes regressed two consecutive seasons and hes 32. Anyone who thinks hes going to produce even as well as last year is foolish. You'll be lucky to get a sub 5 ERA out of him

No, that's a foolish statement.  It's no guarantee either way.  He was excellent at 30.  There are no health issues.  Why is 32 such a doomed to fail age now?  There are all kinds of examples of guys rebounding at that age to levels they were at a few years prior.

And there are 200x more examples of them not. He's done.

That seals it, he'll be better than Corbin next year :P

I would disagree with your math.  Very "fuzzy."

Gyorko is a RH.

I for some reason though he was LH. Doesn’t make as much sense then. Especially for that money. Nevermind.

This would be a good time to sign another pitcher. And trade Strasburg. Wonder what SD would give up?

actually, a good time to sign another pitcher would be in February, unless one falls into their lap.  Keuchel is the class of the rest of the field, and I guess JA Happ.  We aren't winning bidding wars on those guys.  I think the rest of the off-season will be bargain hunting and trades.

Or a trade for Greinke. Then you can get something back from SD to make up for what you give to AZ.

I'd be happy to wait until late January and see if anyone is still waiting around.

I never get the "trade Strasburg" posts. It may have made sense before he signed the extension, but he is an excellent pitcher and their aren't many guys out there better than him, and the Nats don't have the prospects to trade for anyone cheaper or controlled longer.

Because there isn’t a player on this team* that someone hasn’t suggested trading away or outright cashiering at some point.
Usually after they had the audacity to get injured, or have a couple of bad games, or do something especially heinous like laugh at the wrong time.

*People suggested trading Soto, but that was before he was called up.

I'd consider trading Strasburg to the Yankees for a package of something like Jordan Montgomery, Clint Frazier, Greg Bird and Jonathan Loaisiga. One TJ starter but who looked good his rookie year, one potential stud OF in a crowded OF, a reclamation project LH 1B and their #2 prospect who flashed good stuff in the MLB. It's a lot of risk - Frazier is returning from a concussion, TJ surgery has its risks and Bird has either been awesome or awful. Maybe add a #15-20 prospect. The Yankees don't *need* any of those guys and it won't hurt them this year or even next year while adding a controlled stud SP. The upside for us is you're potentially getting a starting LF, a #3 pitcher, a starting 1B and another #2-3 pitcher - depth we desperately need. Not saying I'd do it but I'd consider it.

Who knows!

disclaimer - my trade proposal sucks

Because that contract is an albatross.  Strasburg will never be healthy. You are basically hoping, every season, that he can give you 20 starts and be healthy at the end of the season.

No one is taking that contract unless it comes with prospects.
