:lmao: Maybe you missed where we had similar and better production from those spots this season and weren't competitive at all. Somehow Scherzer not being an ace and Strasburg spending more time on the DL keeps us competitive for a while?
They need another pitcher. They have money to sign a free agent.

"Another pitcher"

No, dummy, they need like three

Current Rotation:
Scherzer
Good pitcher who usually misses 25% of the season
No one
Guy who can't get through 5 innings
Guy who posted back to back 4+ ERA seasons and wants 10 million dollars.

Meanwhile, two of the top 10 rotations are in the division, with the Phillies having a Cy Young candidate, decent depth, and a ton of money. Oh and so do the Braves, who just won 90 games and probably the deepest farm system in baseball with which to make deals with.

But hey .... they need another pitcher. Sure. Go ahead an believe that  bullcrap.

I’ve previously stated they need two starters in previous posts. I’m also on record as stating that they need someone who can be at the top of the rotation in 3-5 years. They can sign Corbin and also fill in with a lower profile starter. Roark can be the five.

The Phillies have Nola. And Arrieta who is declining. The other guys are all question marks. The Braves have questions in their rotations also. Now if one of them signs Corbin...

The Braves questions just posted the 4th best ERA and they have 4 pitching prospects in the Top 50 (and three more in the Top 100).

 :mg:

I'm still thinking a Corbin and Grandal signing will make this a pretty stellar offseason. I'll enjoy watching Harper walk away.

What the hell is going on here?

I've entered some weird Twilight Zone where Nats fans are nonchalant about letting Rendon walk and starting Carter "Chris Marrero" Kieboom.  JFC.

Hardly. But wouldn't it be nice to have some insurance incase he leaves?

What kind of spot would we be in if we lose Harper and didn't have Robles because we traded him away? The same thing applies to Rendon.

Derek Dietrich is a fresh free agent. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/11/derek-dietrich-clears-waivers-elects-free-agency.html

He played 1B/2B/3B/LF last season (albeit none of them well). He owns a .259/.343/.434 (112 wRC+) career line against right handers. Would love to see him on our bench. Although he might fit better in the AL where he can DH.

Like Yelich, Bour and many of the Marlins from several years ago, he always seemed to hit well against the Nats. I'd take him.

And I don't think Dietrich is a bad fielder at all.  Not sure about the metrics, but he passes the eye test.

Nats sign Henderson Alvarez to a minor league deal.

Looks like AAA depth.

Lonnie Chisenall signs with the Pirates, 1 year, 2.75 million.

I would have taken that deal to the Nationals. Maybe they can promise him more starting time from the beginning, but between Eaton and Zimmerman, Chisenhall would have gotten significant playing time in the season.

he's perfect.  I mean, how much worse can his glove be than Matt Adams, Adam Lind, or even Daniel Murphy?  That's your Zim platoon / DH / corner OF backup, who could play extended 2d or 3d.

LeMahieu is very interesting too at 2d. downside is he's contact-dependent with a BABIP-driven average and little power.  I can't pull the home / road splits, but I'll guess that Coors helps him. His defense is good.  His skill set looks a little like Denard Span's, but at 2d. Drop him in the 2d half of the order, maybe #9, maybe #6.

:lmao: that anyone would even think for a second the Nationals are going to platoon Zimmerman ....

You misunderstand, my friend.  of course they don't have a time-sharing starting platoon at 1st.  But the Nats usually look for a lefty to back up Zimmerman to pinch hit, fill in for him occasionally against a righty to give him rest, and to play if he's nicked up. Literally, that Lind  and Adams, and was part of the attraction of Murphy.

What I like is that LeMahieu generally puts the bat on the ball. (Strikeouts drive me crazy.) Also, he has always hit for a good batting average. Over .300 in 2017 and his .276 last year translates to close to .300 in less pitcher-dominant seasons. Lifetime average of .298 in almost 4000 PA's.
