https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2018/06/12/national-league-exec-on-bryce-harper-hes-simply-overrated-hes-a-losing-player/

how the heck does this guy know he "cares more about himself than the team?"  Has he heard Werth (his friend) or maybe LaRoche rat him out?  Can he point to an instance where he said something like, "I'm just doing my thing here and if we win, so be it."  By the way, that is pretty close to something Adrian Gonzalez said in Boston, except he laid winning and losing on G-d's plans and not team effort.  Is it his tendency to throw to the wrong base, not shorten his swing with 2 strikes, not bunt against the shift?  Those are things that could be said about a lot of players, including "team" leader guys like David Ortiz (except for the throwing part).

Can you imagine Max Scherzer leaving a game because he fouled a ball off his toe?

Yes I can. I can imagine every ballplayer doing the same thing.  I've seen plenty of tough, grit and hustle types leave games when they take a ball in the wrong spot.  As for Scherzer, if he stood in at bat after fouling a pitch off his leg, he'd be an idiot.  Of all  people I'd not want to continue if their back foot was numbed by a hit, it would be a pitcher who then has to stand on that leg to pitch.

Based on “this year” if you’re an outsider watching Bryce Harper for the first time I can understand the evaluation of him being labeled “a selfish losing player”.
Harper has overthrown the cutoff man allowing runners to move up on several occasions this season to showcase his arm and did so again last night in New York. I’ve also seen Bryce after poor at-bats slamming helmets and bats around in the dugout while having large leads on the scoreboard  which I’m sure  doesn’t bode well with his teammates. And you can say what you want about Harper pulling himself from the game last night, I can easily see someone saying it appeared as if he was “packing it in” because he wasn’t likely going to get another at-bat.

All that being said, my evaluation of Harper is, he is simply ANOTHER over anxious player in their contract year. (a la Desmond) Harper is so anxious right now while hitting he is moving too early and too hard to the pitch causing himself to recoil (jolt) against his front side. It’s hard enough to hit MLB pitching you certainly don’t want your eyes jolting around and your weight bouncing back towards the catcher as you swing. Harper has had success in the past when recoiling however,  it’s never been as violent/jolting as now. That’s how talented and strong he is how many players can recoil towards the catcher and still hit a baseball 420 feet.
I’m sure it’s not gonna be easy to get an anxious Harper to calm down with that much 💰 💰 coin 💰 💰 on the table.

This is a well thought out post. Small sample size, but your QARP (Quality Above Replacement Poster) is headed a really good direction. Post more.

I am shocked an anonymous baseball executive would, anonymously, blast an easy target just to be an jerk.

He might start by not taking himself out of the game after hitting a foul ball off his toe. This wasn't the first time I have seen Bryce Harper quit on his team.

Can you imagine Max Scherzer leaving a game because he fouled a ball off his toe?
According to Martinez, Bryce said he was fine and was walking around the locker room with no problem.

No. You're more of a John Lannan or Craig Stammen when he started. Not good, but right over the 0 mark. You pitch a lot of innings and there is value in someone who reports to duty consistently.

That may have been Bryce's single greatest achievement, bigger than MVP

Pretty solid faint praise right there.  If I have the choice I'll pick Stammen.

I am the Ian Desmond of the board. I've been around since the beginning, but never really have done anything noteworthy or all that good, but I'm here, crapposting daily. Eventually I'll wither away to the AL, only to become an irrelevant footnote in WNFF history.

Or I could be the Elijah Dukes of the board, only looking to stir things up :stir:

In that post alone you managed to reference two of Air Desmond's biggest crushes.

Don't forget Tony Plush.

I was astonished to see him back posting again this week, a mere 37 posts since inception.  But spread over a LONG time.

He's probably around 30 by now.

He also had a thing with Zimmerman, Clippard and followed Milledge to the pirates.

That contract will not look good in 5 years. Especially in the NL.

Too funny. I’m a boy amongst men with all the Ivy Leaguers around here. When I started seeing baseball reports such as, “his 94 mph fastball has a spin rate that gives it decimal riding life”  I knew the game had passed me by.  :old:

He might start by adjusting his swing when he is behind in the count with RISP instead of continuing to swing from his heels. The 19 year old does this beautifully when the situation calls. The 19 year old also hits the cut off instead of trying to make a miraculous play at the plate allowing the trailing runner to take an extra base.
