Agreed. His willingness to stand up for guys (Bryce) has changed my mind quite a bit. I think this is a team that feeds off of that emotional fire and Harper is certainly that kind of guy. Williams may have finally become a part of the clubhouse that is helping the chemistry and even though I don't love all of his decision-making I have to think he can get better at that and that the attitude he is bringing may really be starting to pay dividends. This team is scary tough right now. When we went down 2 runs today, I wasn't the slightest bit concerned and I couldn't have honestly said that earlier this year.

That's how I felt last night down by 4. I had faith those runs would get scored. I didn't have faith we'd stop allowing runs, but I did have faith 4 more were coming.

Generally agree with your comments, but it pissed me off when he had Espinosa bunt last night with 2 on and no out. Eat that crap bunt lovers.

Bullpen management has been going quite well recently. But the bullpen as a whole has been absolutely dominant for the better part of a month. Quite the turn around.

Yeah I think he now has a sense for roles. I think a guy like Janssen is going to be really good for us because of his pinpoint control.

If he pulled him out everyone would be decrying him as babying the pitchers, Gio's soft, Matt Williams pulling out JZimm in the playoffs part 2 etc etc etc. Gio wanted to gut it out, he let him, Stras wanted to gut it out, he didn't let him, and he had his reasons for both. Casey Janssen gave up enough runs to lose the lead even had Gio never given up those extra two.

The bigger problem was the 8th itself, I hope Matt's not going to return to his "role guys" BS, Barrett should have been brought in at some point (maybe against Byrd, DP was still very much in order and that has been Barrett's game, DP to end an inning, or strikeout followed by another righty [Cozart] who he could finish off). Especially after Casey Janssen just got off the DL. I don't know that Janssen will ever be good enough to be a "role guy" necessarily, see what he can do then finish an inning he starts with some matchups. These kinds of experiments like Treinen for so many games, testing the waters to see who can be a full-inning guy or not, are better in early April than late May, or when you have a mammoth lead over the competition, which we don't have.

Does anybody know if Barrett was unavailable? I don't remember him pitching more than an inning or so's work in Chicago.

You need to reflect your old school posts better and demand that all pitchers throw 9 innings per game. More if their are double headers.

Barrett has blown it in the 8th inning this season as well. Casey Janssen was brought in here to be the 8th inning guy. Until Rizzo wises up and gets some muh better relievers, Williams is handcuffed.

I'm pretty tired of the save stat dictating so much. I wonder how many games we won last year when Stoten was in the 7th just because Storen happened to face the higher leverage situation.

Yeah, Barrett hasn't been great, but when he's got a certain skillset, it seems the opportunity was there for him to succeed, and Janssen looked very not-good, I wonder why you don't try something different, especially when Janssen has barely been back a week. I don't even like the idea of an "8th inning guy" unless we trade for Papelbon/Chapman and that 8th inning guy is Drew Storen.

But since I doubt that's happening, I wonder what "8th inning guys" are out there. Last year the Orioles picked up Andrew Miller, are there any of those out there this year? Maybe Joaquin Benoit? I wouldn't mind some sort of matchup ball in the 6th and 7th, variations of Barrett, Thornton, Grace, Janssen, etc, then Benoit 8th Storen 9th. Or, you know, just send in your best relievers against the toughest opposition, like the above poster suggested.

I had the Reds announcers...first thing they said was "it hit his pitching arm". Then pointed to Gio flexing the arm as he tried to loosen up. Sure, maybe Williams had a better view, since Williams and McCatty should have checked Gio's upper arm.

The Giants playoff was different: Zmnn pitching smoothly all game.

He was throwing in the bullpen but bringing that bum in would be just as disastrous.

Not really. You have a guy who doesn't have the work load for the MLB level, who got hammered his second time through the order. It was pretty obvious you needed to pull him.

You do realize that starters in the minors carry the same workload as starters in the majors, right?

Point is that endurance wasn't an issue 4 innings in.
