I didn't get to see the game but it does sound as though THIS loss was not on Williams, although Rendon bunting is still absurd :smh:

It takes more than one baker to make a world record-sized turd pie.  Williams was one of those bakers.  So were Rivero, Treinen, Storen, and to a lesser extent Papelbon.  If Williams had left Zimmermann in to get one more out (remember, he'd given up THREE hits to that point and was on exactly 100 pitches), he would have had Thornton in the 7th, probably instead of Rivero.  It's most on Rivero and Storen. Treinen at least got two outs before the parade of walks.  Rivero came in to pitch to two hitters and walked them.  Then Storen came in and sprinkled rockets in with his bases-loaded walks.  All the while Williams sat there, because he'd already shot all his bullets.  Each of Treinen, Rivero, and Storen threw more balls than strikes.  Tell me when you've ever seen three pitchers for a team in a game do that, much less in the same inning.

Tonight was on Rizzo he didn't fix the bullpen at the deadline. Carpenter never came back from the DL. Stammen went down we needed more than just Papelbon.

Barrett too.

If you were to say, "who are the Nats best 4 relievers on the roster right now," you could make a case that Treinen, Rivero, Storen, and Papelbon are the guys.  As bad as MW has been, is there anything he could have done about the 7th?

100% this. I don't put today on him. He managed his bullpen with a refreshing urgency.

I have Thornton in the top 4 over Treinen, but that doesn't negate your point.

I hate MW as much as the next guy, but this loss is more on every of one of those relievers.   I like Rivero, but I think he's two years away from being where the team needs him to be.  He's too young and can't throw strikes.

He's great, but (like Barrett last year) has been thrust into the wrong situations too early due to lack of options.

Bunting Rendon, especially in a 301 count was unforgivable.

I think sacking Matt Williams is short sighted. He was manager of the year last year. How quickly we forget.

Damn. The XM subscription for my rental car must have expired because it kicked off last night right at midnight. Matt is scheduled to be on MLB Network Radio at 8:35 this morning and I was planning in listening on my way to work. Oh well. If anyone catches the interview, please enlighten us. Thanks in advance!

Fans booed Matt Williams from the Presidents Club as he ended his presser. That's a first.

When the corporate foofs start joining in the booing...your organisation really does have problems.

Bunting at any count was unforgivable.  Even if Rendon got a good bunt down, then the Mets intentionally walk Harper.  It just shows an utter lack of baseball sense.

Yesterday's top manager can easily become tomorrow's bumbling idiot (see NBA and NHL for all the coaches-of-the-year who got sacked just two or three years on).

If I didn't produce results at my job, I'd be crapcanned, and I work for a nonprofit which has total annual revenue of under 20 mil.

The reason the media heralds Rizzo is because the team looks so good on paper. It's up to the manager to help those players be all they can be and put them in the right situations, help a guy when he struggles, sit a guy when he needs rest, and so on. I fully believe you are right and this team would have won already with a good manager.

So, what are your thoughts on Don Cherry and Randy Bachman?

I wasn't asked for my opinion but will give it anyway - having visited his home town of Winnipeg a few times in the past year I wish to report that his name is pronounced "Backmun", not Bockmun.  Contrary to the prevailing practice.

Williams: "Team Meeting? No need. Everyone understands where we're at & what's in front of us. We got a bunch of veteran guys"

:smh:  I really think someone needs to light a fire under their asses, but maybe that's just me...

Difficult to listen to Matt Williams attempt to explain bunting Rendon 3-1 on @MLBNetworkRadio - "There's options there" isn't a reason.

Can't blame him for the 'pen last night since EVERYONE freaked up, but bunting Rendon, your best contact hitter, when you need a big hit to get a rally going? No, that's just stupid.

Just fire this bozo already.

The guy was a freaking MVP candidate. Can't understand why you'd do this, this isn't the 1910s. Bunting for a hit is one thing but Rendon doesn't have that speed. If Rendon bunted EVER last year we'd have had a fit.

LOL: I love when people say this....

Listen man. Watch the games. His in-game strategy might be the worst I have seen in a very long time. People aren't just trolling here. The dude is not good.

Rendon last night. Not pinch hitting for Max on Sunday. I can't even begin to explain what is going through his mind. They are moronic calls that a major league manager cannot make. It isn't personal.

This is why a team with this much talent can't go "winging it" for the new hot managerial candidate and needs to go with a proven one.

Question is: who will replace Williams? I like Rizzo, I don't want to see him go anywhere but will he admit defeat?
