Did I say he was unproductive? I'm talking about sustaining a productive season. In 2014 and 2013, he didn't stay healthy. In 2012, he went in to an awful slump and basically disappeared after two months (the Yankees series).

How do you define "sustain a productive season"?

Apparently the same way Joe Morgan did. He needs to "gain consistency".

So what's consistent? Does he have to go 1 for 3 every day? You're gonna have up swings and down swings. The hope is that when he downswings he still manages to hit like .260, because his upswings are pretty insane. What you don't want to see is a downswing where he's complete crap, but I don't see that happening. His plate discipline and approach are vastly improved this year. He's finally "getting it."

"Consistency" - the most consistently misused word in all baseball.

I'm pretty sure I would be the most consistent hitter in the history of the game if they could give me a qualifying number of PA's.  I would never break up my consistent performance with, say, a hit.

Slate, how can Harper know when to hit home runs and draw walks if you don't give him the schedule?

Has Bryce Harper faced a pitcher younger than him yet?

If I may piggy back on your question, has he faced a top quality pitcher?   Who's the best pitcher he's homered against?     Not trying to be a SA, just curious.

And what exactly does "staying healthy" equate to in terms of number of games played?  Very few players go through prolonged careers averaging 150+ games per season.

1. Stay healthy
2. Avoid massive, two month slumps. Remember in 2012, after the Yankees series? He went in to that series OPSing .922. 63 games later,  he's sitting at .730.

I'm not counting on Werth or Desmond ever showing up. I'm not betting a whole lot on Rendon or Zimmerman breaking out big. Harper IS this team's offense. If he goes in to a slump like that, the Nationals are going to be in trouble.

Remember 4 years ago, when he was 19?

Okay, that's great, still doesn't change the fact that he has a habit of long slumps and not staying healthy.

You guys are acting like I said he was trash. I simply want to see some consistency.

anyone remember the first month or so of April 2013 before he hit the wall?  He was putting up these kinds of numbers back then.  He was also putting them from August onward IIRC last year.

Slate is right, stay healthy and we're looking at .330/.430/.700 type numbers with 40+ HRs.  E.g. MVP/Hall of Fame type performances.

That's all I'm saying. We know he has the talent. He's somehow gotten better in the offseason. The questions are: Will he stay healthy? Can he stay out of his own head?

Toronto has a starter who's 20 and we play them next week.

One of the best sports moments I've ever witnessed live. I was sitting down the 3B line and I could see him timing Fake Tough. I was thinking how great it would be if he stole home, not thinking he would actually do it.

Obviously I've been out of the loop but it appears Slate has a personal vendetta against Harper. Kind of irrational.

Only because he's doing so well and we're all praising him.  Let him slow down and bit and us all start nagging about him and Slate will be his #1 fan
