The season has gone for about six weeks, but Harper's walk rate -- about 19% -- is Yostian. That is, Eddie Yost often led the AL in walks, with a walk-rate of 20 - 22%. Frequently, Yost had an OBP over .400 and finished with a lifetime OBP of .394...across 18 seasons. Yost and Ted Williams were so good that umpires let them call the close pitches. If Yost didn't swing, it was a ball.

Yost had power that the old ballpark swallowed (until about 1956 it was 400 feet down the 3B line), but nothing like Harper's power.

Harper hits them like Harmon Killebrew did in 1959, at age 23, when Killer walked about 14%. Furthermore, Killebrew hit behind a guy who hit 31 home runs and ahead of a guy who hit 33. Another mid-lineup guy only hit 21 homers, because he was hurt, but had hit 39 the year before and 42 the year before that.

Some guys play as if they are meant for a slightly higher league than the majors. In the NFL, Sonny Jurgensen played as if he was a heart-beart (or two) ahead of everyone else. Harper is still improving, but this season, he looks like he's headed toward that MLB Extra league.

Consider the source.

What are you saying? That the source is unreliable?

That's amazing.  Game doesn't start for another 13 hours and he already has 3 walks!  How does he do it?

198 OPS+ on the season.

In his last 27 games, he has a 1.247 OPS, 10 home runs, 7 doubles, 28 RBI, 28 walks and 25 strikeouts.

Unreal.

He's going to run away with the NL MVP this year.

And hopefully, World Series MVP as well.  :mg:

Maybe more impressively than that, ESPN has him first in baseball at 2.9 WAR.  I don't know if I love ESPN's numbers but it's enough to indicate that he's having an absolutely stellar year.  Fangraphs has him at 2.5 and considering his career high in fWAR over a full season is 4.6 that's damn impressive halfway through May (couldn't find a Fangraphs leaderboard).  The longer this continues, the longer it seems obvious that our superstar has finally been born.

On the WAR leaderboards, Bryce is second behind Dee Gordon on Fangraphs, and first on BaseballProspectus and BaseballReference.

I'm going to form the opinion that Bryce's ex-fiancee did something bad and Bryce is in "freak you I'm gonna kick ass" mode.

The 30 for 30 will be legendary.

Well Gordon is going to fall off.  Batting over .400 is something almost no one ever does.  Only considering the live-ball era, Gordon's .433 would be the highest batting average of all time.  Only Rogers Hornsby (3 times), George Sisler (2 times), Ted Williams, Harry Heilmann, Bill Terry, and Ty Cobb have ever batted over .400 in the live-ball era, none since Williams did it in 1941.  All of those guys are Hall of Famers.  So I'd say Harper can essentially be considered first since Gordon cannot possibly keep this pace up especially since he doesn't walk enough to make me think he'll adjust well to the adjustments pitchers make to him (a.k.a. not throwing strikes).

ICYMI

Quote from: Sports Illustrated
Major league baseball players have voted in an ESPN The Magazine poll that Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper is the most overrated in the league, according to the Washington Post.

Harper was the leading vote-getter, receiving 41 percent of the total. Yasiel Puig came second with 15 percent of the vote. Mike Trout was voted the best overall player in the league.

As the Washington Post notes, Harper was also voted the most overrated player in the MLB in the same poll last year.

Yeh.  We should go back to having the players vote for the all stars cause they are so knowledgeable.
