Didn't know who he was by name but the photo ...  "oh yeah".
I was going to include the link to the theme song but it seemed wildly inappropriate in a post about his death.

But screw it this is a great song and I can't be the only one who instantly started singing it in my head lol

That was during one of my "no TV" periods.     Part of that time, I was in the Army.    The rest of the time  ...  ummmm  .....   I was busy.

"The Professor" is gone:
http://www.tmz.com/2014/01/16/professor-gilligans-island-died-dead-russell-johnson/?icid=maing-grid7%7Cmain5%7Cdl1%7Csec1_lnk2%26pLid%3D431375
I recently saw Russell Johnson, (before Gilligan's Island was made), starring in a rerun of a Twilight Zone episode via cable retro channel MeTV.  It had a nice twist to it:
The Twilight Zone Season 2, Episode 13. Back There TV-PG CC.
It's April 14, 1961. Peter Corrigan and friends are discussing time travel at their men's club. Corrigan suddenly becomes dizzy. When his head clears, he has moved back to April 14, 1865 - the date of Lincoln's assassination.
Starring: Russell Johnson

The episode can be seen for free here:

Saw that; true icon of folk music.

Also saw Tom Gola died a couple days ago.  I know being a basketball fan you will remember the name.  He was also City Controller in Philly when Arlen Specter was the DA.  Sounded sad in that he had been in a coma for like 10 years after a bad fall.

Sure do remember Tom Gola.   I think I saw him when he was at La Salle.    I was a Duquesne fan at the time and they played each other  ...   Duquesne had Sihugo Green (and his jumping sox).     Plus, closer family connections to Duquesne vs La Salle during that time but will not discuss here.    :)

A little before my time.  I do remember Penn going down to Morgantown and beating Duquesne with the Nelson twins and some other big guy in the NCAA one year.  Will the program ever come back.  They had some great teams years ago but don't recall any recent glory.

I followed Duquesne then as well  ...   another family connection was part of that team.     In fact, I still have a 1970 NIT wrist watch given to participants.

Trivia  ...  during that time, Duquesne freshman played Maryland freshman at Cole.    I was told, "You gotta go to the game.   Maryland has two good big men starting on their freshman team."

very cool.

I think that was the year Penn was undefeated and beat them and South Carolina and then somehow lost to Villanova in the Elite 8 by 90-47 after having beaten Nova earlier that year.  My brother went to Penn at that time and Grandpa and Dad had graduated from Penn also so I was a big fan.  Of course Penn made it to the final 4 in 1979 and then drubbed by Magic and co.

I miss the Big 5 doubleheaders on Wednesday/Saturday nights at the Palestra.  Someday want to take my son up there for a game. They don;t do too many non-Penn games there any more.

As you know, the venues in Philly have grown and there's too much money to be shared.    Plus, nobody wants to play another Big 5 team on their home court.   :)

Yep.  too much $ nowadays.  The beauty of the Palestra at that time was that it was everyone's home court so the City games were half and half fans.

This makes me think of another guy you will know and best college player I ever saw in that era.  Kenny Durrett who I believe was from the Pittsburgh area. Too bad he blew out his knee.  The 67 or 68 team with him and Larry Cannon and Fatty Taylor and Bernie Williams would have challenged UCLA but was on probation.

Saw Durrett play many times at Schenley HS in Pittsburgh.    He teamed up with Petey Gibson to win the state championship in 1966.   Of course, in those days, Philly HS' didn't participate in the PIAA.    Can you imagine Wilt in the PIAA tourney while at Overbrook?    :)

The 50's, 60's and 70's were great basketball times in Western PA.   I got drafted (Army not the NBA :)) and left the area but I still follow "local" guys who make good  ...  like coach Sean Miller of the number one Arizona Wildcats.

Yep, think they would have had a chance?  :)

My high school finally won the Catholic League title in 75 my senior year after years of coming close.  Then they were crushed by West Philly with Gene Banks and several other future NCAA guys.  West Philly would have won the State that year.

Don't remember Petey Gibson.

I think Gibson went to NM after HS.    After Durrett and Gibson at Schenley came a kid named Maurice Lucas.    We should stop hijacking this thread or one of the mods will split us out.   :)     Maybe I'll start a "Who's the best HS/college basketball player you've ever seen in person?" thread.   :pimp:

OK, not super famous except to anyone who grew up here in the late 50's-early 60's but the guy who played Cap'n Tugg died.  Anyone else remember watching him on WTTG in those days?  I LOVED that show.
