...and I've always thought a balk was called a ball if there was no base-runner.
Well, either I read the balk rule, or I read every at-bat and play in the June 12th, 1967 game between the Nats and the White Sox. See DC Baseball History:
http://dcbaseballhistory.com/2014/06/this-day-in-d-c-baseball-history-casanovas-long-night/Night game went 22 innings in six hours and 38 minutes. I was listening from Chicago but gave up around midnight. Paul Cas-a-NO-va won it with a base-hit to score Hank Allen. Gary Sarnoff, author of "The Wrecking Crew of '33" says that Cassie claimed he could have caught another 22 innings if it had been necessary.
Ah, just to read the names of the players: Frank Howard homered and was pulled for Allen; Bernie Allen, Hank Allen, Ken McMullen, Mike Epstein (when Epstein hit one into the upper deck at DC/RFK Stadium, they painted the seat blue). White Sox starter was Joel Horlen. They had Tommy Agee, plus Ron Hansen...who made an unassisted triple-play as a SS for the Nats.
