The Nats have 33 games and can not play .500 ball.

I think we're a deeper team than we were in 2012 but not necessarily as top heavy. We don't have anyone who had the individual dominant seasons like in 2012 when we had Gio who had a Cy Young caliber season, Harper who won ROY, and Laroche and Desi who were both much better offensively. On the flip side, we aren't giving away outs with guys like Espinosa in the lineup, and our bottom end of the rotation is much better with Roark/Fister over Detwiler/Jackson(though you could argue Roark and Fister could be our top 2 this year). Bullpen is probably a wash. Our bench is way worse this year though.

On point for the most part. I would add one important difference...this team has been there before and hopefully they learned something in 2012.

Okay, if they go 17-16, what do the Braves have to do to catch them?

I think it was in 2012 when someone posted a table that had the different permutations...you know, if the Nats won X number of games the rest of the way, what would the Braves have to do?

25-8 if my math is correct, and that would just get them to a tie.

If the Nats play .500 ball the rest of the way, what would the Barfs have to do to catch them?

There are 31 games left for each team and the Nats are up by 8 games.

~.770

Basically, the Braves have to go 24-7 to overtake the Nats.

24-7 to tie

And that is so not happening. I am assuming the Nats will cool off some but there's no way the Barfs can play that kind of ball.

33 games remaining so we can't go .500 but let's say 17-16.  That leave us 92-70.
Braves have 68 wins with 31 games left.  They would need to go 24-7 to tie us.

Someone should check my calculations but that's what I come up with.

Yeah, 17-16 would be cooling off.

I'm just being conservative for the sake of calculation. There's no way I think the Nats will go less than 20-13 the rest of the way.

Nats have 33 game remaining. If the Nats were to win 17 the braves would have to go 24-7 to force a tie.

we still have 6 head to head games left- until the lead is significantly more than remaining head to head, I'm personally not calling it over (although I do think playoffs is a almost a sure thing)

I am so with you on this. It's never over until it's over. Personally, I would like to see the Nats bury the Barfs when they play them here.

I'm calling it: we sweep the Braves here.

By the time we play there the Braves will be done.

--Whispers are getting louder in baseball circles that if the Atlanta Braves miss the playoffs, it could result in a front-office shakeup involving GM Frank Wren and perhaps even manager Fredi Gonzalez.

Braves CEO Terry McGuirk, in a lengthy interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, did not offer any votes of confidence, saying only that they are accountable for the team's performance.

That would be the only downside of them not making the playoffs. I like them having Freddi and Wren doing stupid things.

In May of 1979, I went to a Royals-O's game at Memorial Stadium. Dennis Martinez pitched a 3-0 shutout. As the parking lots emptied, people were boisterous in their cars, honking and cheering as if it were going to be a special season.

Yes, it sort of feels like that.

On one hand I agree. As much as some people here bash Matt Williams's gameday management(I being one of them), he doesn't hold a candle to the moron that is Freddie. And Wren is no Scherzholz(sp).

On the other hand, if they fire both their Manager and GM you kinda figure they may decline for a few years and drop off the radar as far as being competitors for the division. It's kinda hard to just rebound after replacing your GM and Manager when your roster is already pretty far behind the top dogs.

Martínez is the reason I'm posting here.  That guy inspired me when I was just a little tyke.  It started with being a fan of him, and it turned into loving the rest of the team.

you probably saw the stuff in the Boston Herald about him being a Boston target.  Dream right fielder for them and they would extend him.
