I believe it came down to Richmond, Virginia and Columbus, Ohio. The crazy Ohio ABV laws may have played a hand in them choosing Richmond over Columbus.

Actually, it came down to picking between Richmond and Norfolk.  Richmond won because of access to state government and because of the many small breweries that are growing in Central VA

Columbus must have been #3 then as they are going to specifically make a one-off batch for Ohio tot hank them for their grassroots efforts to bring them to Ohio.  Of course I sure it will be less than 12% ABV.

Bought a Shock Top variety pack.

Shock Top Twisted Pretzel wheat. Actually not bad.

On the other hand the honey bourbon cask wheat beer is repulsive. Bad smell, horrible taste.

Haven't tried the shockolate one yet.

Yesterday, I bought the beer that I wait all year for.

$14.89 for a four pack. Picked up 2 Four packs.

It is the Founders Brewing Backwoods Bastard. It is their  scotch ale (the Dirty Bastard) that is then aged in bourbon barrels.

Reminds me of the Sam Adams holiday sampler pack.  It always had Cranberry Lambic, it was foul.

I like a lot of them, and all of them in the sampler were decent except the cranberry one.

I love me some good Belgian lambic. But I can see how that might get lost in translation when made by someone who should be sticking to the lagers & ales they are good at.

They do a great job with their cream stout.  But yeah, their beers are very hit-or-miss.

I liked their Cold Snap from earlier this year. Wasn't a fan of their Summer Ale or Octoberfest.

So Terp - how was Madd Foxx ?

Outstanding.  They blocked off the rectangular courtyard and had a small acoustic band playing into the box.  $20 got you six tickets plus a glass.   Each ticket good for 4 oz of any of the many beers available.  Keep in mind all of these beers had secondary fermentation in casks, the theme of the tasting.  Each additional ticket was $2.   The serving was done by volunteers from a beer club and after the first couple I got they seemed to start filling up past the 4 oz line pretty regularly.

They had a guy that stayed overnight roasting a pig from which they served pork bbq sandwiches or tacos, excellent smoky bbq with 4 good sauces to choose from, including carolina vinegar based.

I didn't have a bad beer in the bunch.  Most outstanding to me was 3 Stars Brewing Company's Pandemic Porter.

http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/25696/97973/

I also really liked:

Devils Backbone Brewing Company - Wood-Aged Kilt Flasher - 8.0% ABV
DC Brau Brewing Company - Stone of Arbroath - 8.5% ABV
and Mad Fox's own Yambag Imperial Sweet Potato Porter - 8.0% ABV

They had lots of standing tables around and it was reasonably warm inside the courtyard, sun shining in from the south which warmed it a bit.  Good crowd but never a line to get a beer, they moved it fast.   Bit short on restroom facilities, inside the Mad Fox was the only real option.

Definitely would do it again.

A Center For Disease Control study says 9 of 10 people who drink excessively are not alcoholics.  I'll drink to that.
