Hunting is how he got in shape in 2012 :couch:

Yea, but his offseason started in like June of 2011.

It seems any logical upgrade would be 2B or 3B moving Zim to first.

Beltran to the Yanks. wtf are they going to do with so many OFs?  Gardner, Ellsbury, Soriano, Wells, Ichiro and now Beltran. LOL

But 2B and 3B are the least deep positions on the open AND trade markets.  1B is an easier fill.

Also, Beltran to the Yankees.

Gardner, Ellsbury, Ichiro start; Soriano to infield; Beltran to DH?

Gardner, Ellsbury, Beltran. Soriano DH. Neither Suzuki or Wells offer enough offense to be part of the picture

Yanks picked up Ellsbury, McCann, Kuroda & Beltran for roughly 300M while Cano got 240M.

I also forgot that Corey Hart was available.  Not a bad idea.

Didn't he tear an ACL or something?

He tore like 12 ACLs, some not even his own.  He was a decent hitter before the injury.  His stats are more inflated at Miller Park, but I think you could expect something like a .260/.340/.490 line from him.  Not elite, but I think he will provide better than LaRoche.  Probably only going to get a two or three year deal.  I'd overpay for two years with a club option 3rd year.

Span, Werth, Zim, Harper, Hart, Desmond, Ramos, Rendon, Pitcher.  A little unbalanced, but probably where everyone fits in the lineup.

Also, the Nats can hire him wear his Sunglasses at Night.  8)

Am I the only one that would rather have an 8 man pen than a 5 man bench? I think I may be.

Given this team's propensity for not scoring runs . . .

I'd take another lefty specialist over a veteran batting .120

I can definitely see that angle. For some reason I always feel like pitchers shouldn't pitch on consecutive days more than once every couple of weeks, unless it's the closer. Also long men should have 2 days rest between outings of >40 pitches. But looking at the roster this way I can stand it.

Werth
Span
Harper
Zimmermann
Desmond
Rendon
LaRoche
Ramos
Strasburg
Gonzo
Zimmermann
Fister
Roark
McClouth
Hairston
Walters
Moore
Backup C
Stammen
Ohlendorf
Detwiler
Lefty
Clippard
Storen
Soriano

This way you have at least three guys that can go multiple innings. I've always thought that there should be three guys who go innings 7-8-9 in a close game and pitch consecutive days should you need it, and then guys who can pitch multiple innings in non-close games.

The only way we get a four man bench is we're willing to send Moore down to Triple A.

Yup. I feel like there's two options.
a. Send him to AAA to get him in the flow of the season and call him up when needed.
b. Play him 2-3 times a week. He's good against either lefties or righties.

I favor B.

I favor B as well...we need to jettison Chinless...so unless we get another 1st baseman that can hit, he's needed now...

Moore should definitely play more. Have him sub for Laroach against lefties, particularly early in the year when Roachy is always hitting like .120 before heating up.

Hell yea we do. We want a bat. It's funny how removing LaRoche out of the lineup could be a huge fix.

let's trade 2013 LaRoche for 2012 Laroche.  That guy could really play.

No, I haven't had the privilege yet of meeting Tom (have spoken by phone and exchanged emails). We did have  a "date" scheduled several years ago (it was at RFK) but it didn't work out.

Not unlike my relationship with WPA.  She's about as social as Dave B.      :poke:

The Nationals have trouble scoring runs, so they need another bat on the bench...but their starters also tend not to go long into games, so they need another reliever in the bullpen. Damned if you do, damned if you don't with that 25th roster spot.

Looking at the 40 man roster, the most obvious issue with team composition right now is way too many right handed pitchers and not enough left handed pitchers. This team still has impressive RHP depth after so many trades.
