Well, Shields was a pretty solid #2, not quite an ace but a very plausible #1 on a few contenders. He was extremely affordable for 2 years of control ($9MM and $12MM), which is less than a Ricky Nolasco or Edwin Jackson level starter. Price, while he's had a Cy Young, is going to cost more than $30MM, probably closer to $33MM, over the next two years. You could make the argument that the difference in cost makes them equivalent trade chips. I don't think you need to, nor should, put Goodwin and one of Souza or Taylor in a package with Cole and Rendon. I walk away from that. Odorizzi was the #86 prospect per Hulet last off seasson and Montgopmery was not even a top 100. True Myers was #4, and Rendon only #39, but Rendon's debut probably confirmed he will not be a bust. Cole was #92 last year, after an off year, and should be in the top 50 this offseason. A package headed by Rendon with Cole should be competitive without offering Goodwin, another top 50 prospect.

I think a Brandon Miller + a Dominican that did well in the GCL would need to be added to make that deal work. Might have to add Burns in as a sweetner to replace Sam Fuld when his salary becomes too much for his plucky style.

Actually, the Burns as a Fuld replacement is brilliant. And putting in a guy or two who does not have to be placed on the 40 man I think would also work for TB, maybe better than Souza or Taylor.

My view is that I don't go overboard to get Price. The intriguing thing Rogers also mentioned is that this should be coupled with trying to land Cano. I'm not huge into these sort of "sign everybody who is good" postings, but seeing him value Rendon so highly made me want to kick the idea around.

a writer for fangraphs said in a chat that he read on ESPN that the Nats are giving teams the impression that desmond is available. I can't find links to the chat or the article right now.

Wow, that's surprising to me. Desmond is the second best SS in the NL…hard to replace that.

Keith Law wrote that he heard the Nats were possibly making Desmond available.

Is anybody concerned that Rizzo doesn't know what he's doing?

I get the vibe that he sees holes where none exist and thinks we're solid where we actually have holes.

I have been critical of Rizzo myself...

He has benefitted from some great draft picks that only come available to terrible teams...so from that standpoint, he's not exactly an Einstein.

I thought the Soriano deal would put us over the top too...no so much, but not his fault.

Letting all the lefty relievers go was dumb...no other way to categorize that.

The long leash on 3Kespi...even dumber.

But he didn't try to talk Davey into staying, so he has my full, unconditional support for that alone.

He wants a winner too...just like we do.

Besides, we're stuck with him for a while, so we may as well buy-in...

ehh the gio trade was brilliant. the zimmerman contract actually looks pretty good now that we are seeing what the market rate is for crappy players. rendon looks like a success and giolito could be a steal. the team is more than harp and stras. the ramos trade is still an amzing one

Andrew Friedman is regarded as one of best, if not the best GM's in the business. Yet he let Josh Hamilton (2010 AL MVP) go for the $50K waiver price, and passed on Buster Posey (2010 NL ROY,2012 NL MVP) in the 2008 draft. The GM's that look best are usually the GM's that have limited budgets,thus lessening the financial impact of their mistakes.

I think we can ignore the rumors: they don't indicate what Rizzo is thinking. He has said that he wants a better bench, that only Lombo played as well as they expected. That seems an accurate assessment of Tracy and Tyler Moore. As best I remember, Rizzo was (purposely) vague about starting pitchers and his expectation that the team would do well if the players had normal years -- not career years but typical years. I assume that's about LaRoche.

Otherwise, we have no idea what Rizzo is planning, which is good.

I'll worry about stuff when stuff happens. "Maybe" Ian Desmond is "available" - but no one is saying that Rizzo is shopping him around - this could be as simple as some GM called, asked if Desmond could be had for the right package - or would you listen to an offer on Desmond. If I was the GM, the answer would be "yes" to both. I wouldn't be looking to trade Desmond - but I would listen to offers on everyone including Harper. It's a business - if someone makes me a stupid, crazy offer, maybe I'd take it. Maybe I wouldn't. But I think it would be crazy to not even listen.

Desmond is available like most players are available. If the Angels come in and offer Mike Trout for Desmond, yea, Desmond is available. But it's unlikely Rizzo is looking to move him for prospects.

In other news, Phil Hughes went for 3/24. That's a guy we could have been in on. 8 mil a year gives us a decent number 4 starter and doesn't make us in a rush to bring up some of the young guys.

There is a poster here who had inside info which turned out to be correct. It was last year I think. Anyway, he'll tell us what to do.
