Mindfact - we'd probably have to pay an extra year and $20 mil in order to get him to come here rather than the Cubs or to go back to the Brewers (or to go to the Dodgers if they are bidding). O's and M's would have to outbid us to get him given how close we are to contending and the Boras connection.

Since we are talking length of contract and commitment, I wanted to bump here Jedgi's post from a few days ago. I had similar thoughts, but he worked through maybe a more precise version. The Nats should go for a high upfront dollar commitment with an opt out. That way, Boras can claim a high minimum guaranteed and retain the flexibility to make more by opting out, and we are less hampered in the long run when Werth gets expensive, regardless of whether the opt out is exercised.

Fielder gets an option to cash in after (hopefully) doing well and getting a lot of money on a (relatively) short term contract. HE would have two options to opt out after year 3 or year 4. If he chooses not to opt out then he will be paid at a lower, yet steady and safe rate throughout the rest of his career (hopefully by this time the NL would potentially have a DH, but if not an overall rate of 16.9M for 10 years isn't bad).

Just a mind spew, probably an awful idea that no one likes, but with all the anticipation I felt the need to post something.

EDIT: Or a simple six years/25 per, that works too!

I heard this morning that he want 5 years/75M. No way Texas will give him that, and that puts them right back in the hunt for Fielder. And I do think Texas would give Fielder the long term deal he wants, in fact they're the only team that would. So if the rumors of Darvish's demands are true I think it's all over.

We are watching kind of an awkward dance go on between Boras and Rizzo right now. Rizzo doesn't quite compare to Boras in terms of being a blowhard.

So who's getting Fielder? Gotta be Seattle by process of elimination right? They do need the offense and the Cubs, Nats, and Rangers are essentially out on Fielder.

Looking at the market... I see this going one of two ways.

Either Prince signs here for say 3/24-26 years but has an opt out after this year... or he goes back to the Brewers on a one year deal and hits FA again next off-season.*

I wouldn't count out the Rangers just because of Darvish. Their decision is going to have to do more with what they want to do with Hamilton and Cruz long term.

I just can't see them adding 35+ to the payroll with Darvish and Prince.

Maybe they would... but they've got a ton of guys in arbitration like Napoli and Cruz that are going to cost big bucks on top of that.

Would be crazy to see them go from 60's in 2010 payroll to 120 in 2012.

Seattle or Milwaukee would shock just about everybody. After KRod accepted arbitration and they signed Aramis Ramirez, I can't see them having any more room.

Cubs are totally out of it now. Dodgers still a wild card but I can't really see it with their ownership situation totally up in the air.

If Boras waits until Darvish signs with Texas, he will just about zero leverage left.

True. Rizzo has not looked that great at this level yet. They may want a backup plan. They could just sign someone if they really want to keep Byrd and don't mind paying the extra dough. They've never minded paying before.
