I love Zuck, but sometimes he just doesn't seem to get it. He's a great dude. Fun and really knowledgeable about the team. But he's just been so off on this story.

He's played the "We're not interested in Fielder because we already have Adam LaRoche" thing for months. That's just such a ludicrous thought. Good to see the big national writers debunk that crap. You don't let Adam Freaking LaRoche deter you from signing Prince Fielder. Ever. Especially when LaRoche has an expiring contract.

He seems to take everything the front office says at face value without looking deeper into it. "Oh, they said they like Adam LaRoche. That ends that." Nope.

Could Zuck just be their guinea pig, telling him to act like they're not interested being he knows the team the "best" and people would take his words in more than others who don't know them? Would hate to believe he's that stupid, but then again I guess anything is possible.

If they wanted to try to control the media, I would think they would do it with Kilgore since the Washington Post is such a big deal. Then again, a WP reporter isn't going to fall for that crap as easily.

In a way, this is also why I love Zuck. You feel like he just loves writing about baseball for a living and now he's actually covering an exciting team. He doesn't look for dirt or try to ruffle feathers. He gives us what we want. I like reading that better. But for breaking news, Kilgore is a better source.

Yeah, my gut feeling is he agrees to terms with us Monday or Tuesday.

Even if they agreed to terms right now, they won't announce it this weekend and go up against the NFL Playoffs. Announce Monday afternoon and you're the top story until the BCS Title Game at least.

Yeah I could see that happening. At least in reference to everything going on this weekend.

At this point I just want him to sign somewhere.  I hope it doesn't drag out another 2 weeks.

Here are the relevant quotes from a radio interview with Cecil via the Federal Baseball website.

Quote from: cecil_fielder
It ain't real until it's done. That's the way I look at it. Everybody can talk. Talk is cheap until you get in there and say you're going to make a deal.  That's the way you've got to look at it , and I think that's the way [Prince] and his agent, Scott Boras are looking at it. Everybody's talking the game but somebody's got to walk the walk. Until that happens... He's wide open. So, that last minute person can come in there and make something happen. You just never know in negotiations or being a free agent how that's going to take place.

...go with the right fit.  You've got an opportunity now as a free agent to pick a team that you want to play for, and you need to pick the right fit. Meaning that you've got to see who's in the lineup, you've got to check out the whole team. You don't want to go to a team that you're going to have to wait five, six years to try to have a chance to win. You want to be able to go in right now and make a difference. And I think if you look at some of those teams that have been inquiring, the Nationals are definitely one of those teams.

I just don't see the Nats signing Fielder . It is not how the Lerners project the team being built.I see our next big acquisition coming in 2013 FA for the protypical CF that we need.Too many moves to accomodate Fielder involving Morse and to a lesser extent LaRoche. We probably could get MLB ready prospects for them and replenish the system after the Gio trade but that has not been the Lerners style.

I will hedge my bet slightly in that we were not in the running (no one reported us being so ) in the Coco Crisp signing so maybe he was too expensive to sign plus Fielder , plus extensions for the Z-boys.

Mark Zuckerman keeps making the same fallacious argument.  $150 million, assuming the Nationals actually get there, will not be an exorbitant payroll in 2015 or 2016.  He clearly doesn't get the concept of the present/future value of money, real/nominal dollars or MLB player salary inflation.  And he completely ignores the team's revenue stream. And the "math" he uses to get to that $150 million is almost certainly wrong.

I expect better from him.

He doesn't have a clue what's going on and neither does the donk that's tweeting that garbage. More fallacious lies.

Awwwww... Assclown learned a new word. Good job PC!

I'd say its more likely that Cecil is speaking out his extremely large ass than it is that he actually knows what Prince is thinking of doing.

Starting at the 38:45 minute mark of this radio clip Cecil states that he spoke with Prince "earlier" and that they were discussing his signing with the Nationals but that "it ain't real until it's done".

I just hope if we sign him, we dont have another Albert Belle on our hands.  The Os signed Albert and he never did anything!  If it wasnt for his health issues the Orioles would probably still be paying for him!

He's a freaking reporter, dude.  He has to report what they say.  And what happens when we don't sign Fielder and Zuckerman was right?

Rizzo, et al, are great at running a tight ship and letting very little leak into the media.

Joey Belle had way more than just health issues.  Dude had a serious anger management problem plus he was on 'roids.

Prince is WAY different from Belle.

I can't tell if this whole saga is feeling more like Doucheface or Donkey.  With Doucheface we were the high bidder but he was using us to drive up the price for The Empire and Donkey basically looked at our offer and went around begging other teams to come close to matching us and when he found no suitor he begrudgingly signed with us.

Either way, it's difficult to think of a positive outcome.

The reminds me of the Beltre and the Holliday sagas that Boras played out where one team was rumored the entire time and it was just a giant staring contest until Boras' price dropped.
