I'm not barking at you Minty - I just find some of baseballs "unwritten" rules to be completely absurd and in many cases totally counter-productive

It's all adolescent, testosterone driven bullcrap - but sometimes guys feel that way so they make up some stupid "bro code" which changes to suit their every whim.  I know, because I do it all the time.

I can understand that point of view. Nobody knew that Quirk was ejected under the Martin/Weaver rule. (Cussing near fans). So it would appear that Porter was equally aggressive.

Even though I though Porter was totally justified (apparently the things Quick was saying were pretty outrageous) - I thought Porter should have been tossed. Standing on the top step of the dugout was absolutely going to escalate things and I definitely thought the pitcher that threw at Bryce should have been tossed.

Otherwise, I actually think Umps actually did a pretty good job with all of it

The rest of your post I tend to agree with, but this is patently false.  The NFL airs games where this takes place on a weekly basis.  The last time I watched the NBA (admittedly it was over 20 years ago) I always saw teams "running out the clock."  It happens nightly in hockey.

I don't agree, because in those cases it's usually good strategy.  That's the difference between basketball and football and a sport that doesn't have a clock.

The difference is that those game limits are decided by a clock, not a pre determined amountof innings. After seeing us lose that 9-0 lead and the game a while back, I don't feel it's ever a good time to ease up. This isn't T-ball, we don't give out participation trophies, we earn pennants and rings. If you want a 6 run mercy rule, take your ass back to the sandlot.

As my parting shot to Quirk....

In addition to the Braves game from this year, let's not forget this little gem.

Man, I barely remember Livan pitching last year. Feels like a lifetime ago. Guess I blocked a lot of it out of my memory.

Sveum's response is the only thing I've heard coming out of the Cubs' side that makes any sense to me.  That's all you can say when you're on the other side of it.  As good as the Nats played, the Cubs made it way easy in the last two games -
Stealth edited to avoid grammar nazi crackdown.  ;)

I was examining this passage closely to make sure you didn't have a "to" in there.

It just struck me as a team completely frustrated.  I try to see it from their point of view:

- We're starting minor leaguers
- You sent Desmond stealing in a game against minor leaguers
- You sent Espinosa stealing in a game against minor leaguers
- Jayson Werth swing on 3-0 with the bases loaded

I know they won't admit it, but Harper stretching that double into a triple probably frosted them in the first inning and when you're losing the way the Cubs are losing they probably interpreted it as rubbing it in.  We suffered through some awful baseball in 2009 and 2010 - REALLY BAD BASEBALL - and I'd admit to probably feeling the way the Cubs did if I factored all of those things into account.  I guess I just feel priviledged being the team that others think are "rubbing their noses in it."

It's only the 5th inning.  And outrage over Werth swinging at a 3-0 pitch IN THE 5th INNING is beyond ridiculous.  What do they expect him to do, stand there to watch strike 3, and repeat with each successive batter until the inning is over?   I can't believe the unwritten rules of baseball, as stupid and illogical as they can be, are this arcane.

Really enjoyed reading/hearing Davey's comments about the scrum last night.   Like Bo's spice act too.   That's Natitude.

Kinda why I included the other things as well.

In all seriousness, it wasn't just the Werth swing, it was the stolen bases, the ass-kicking they had taken previously and I honestly think they though Bryce was showboating on the triple.  Again:  I DON'T THINK BRYCE WAS SHOWING ANYONE UP and I think if they look at it in retrospect they would also think so; but in the heat of the moment, I think they might have perceived it as such.  I know I have done it so it's not a big stretch to think they may have as well.

For sure, "You ain't comin' in here and startin' or talkin' crap.   Those days are gone.   There's a new sheriff in town."   This is an attitude that needs to be implanted on the Phillies' asses as well.

Blaming the media, what did DJ join the Tea Party?

Quote from: Davey
I'd have to blame the media more for creating some mental preparation problems more than anything. There's a whole new scenario, but it's the same scenario on Strasburg as there was on Zimmermann. But the situation ...He's known all along the situation. But with the media attention, I see it's harder for him to concentrate on the job at hand. And I'm sure he's physically a little tired. But this kind of distraction has really kind of exacerbated the situation to the point where I don't think it's in his best interest to go get one more start.
